Lumix GH4

Those of you who have some experience with the GH4, Is there an output signal from the HDMI port before taking a still pic which can be used to frame the shot.

I'm guessing there would be a preview of the shot after it's been taken and a live view in video mode.

Can someone confirm??

Thanks,

Lance

yes, you can get a live feed out of it with a hdmi converter, micro hdmi connector on the gh4 output

Yes, most definitely, however, there's a major issue with taking stills whilst using the video out: you can only shoot in 16:9 mode. Normally stills gives you the option of 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9. Of the three, the 4:3 mode gives you the best resolution. 16:9 is cropped at the top and bottom of the frame, and is not a traditional crop factor for stills.

Thanks Kloner.......I currently have that set up with my Canon 5D gimbal and am going to get a GH4 as I am seeing lots of good results with them for both stills and video. I wasn't 100% sure if it would send any video before taking a still.

Thanks Steve.......That is strange why they would do that. I wonder if they could change it with a firmware update??

the camera seems to have a few open ends like this that one would hope we get a firmware update at some point to address it all. i'm still hoping the thing will output 1080 at some point in UHD modes....

Does it output anything you could use for framing while shooting UHD?

Thanks kloner......I still think it's probably the best choice for this class of camera. What are your thoughts on the Pan 12-35 F2.8 Lens for general daytime work or have you got a better preference??

theres no output..... it works in 59.99 and 50 hz but in 24hz no modes have a live feed.

That's a decent lens, pretty fast and decent focals for flying.

If you got the gimbal, try a rokinon cinelens..... i have the 16 and like it, but somebody posted a 12 or 14mm the other day and was alot smaller... same speed

Yeah I have it on a gimbal......The Rockinon Cine 12mm T2.2 is half the weight as the 16mm which is desirable....I think if I was going to get a specialised lens like this I'd go all the way and get a Voigtlander 25mm

the 30 isn't a true cinema uhd,,,, 59.99hz is 3840x2160 vs 4096x2160 in 24p....

Not to argue but 4096x2160 is 4k, which has a cinematic aspect ratio. Uhd denotes 3840x2160, which is a 16x9 aspect ratio. Same vertical resolution with less width. Uhd as a name is used because 16x9 can't ever be 4k, because of the aspect ratio.
That's how I understand it all anyway. Sorry for the hijack! Love your work kloner

i get ya,,, it's the entire 24hz setting that doesn't have a live feed i believe..... i don't understand how they split up the system speed and the frame rates... confuses the crap out of me. i have a 23.98 4k mode in 59.99 system speed that does work, but at system 24hz no live feed. at least not one compatible with my hdmi converters and in 59.99 there is no 17:9 like mentioned before...

Possibly an issue with the aspect ratio itself? I will be messing with gh4 down link this weekend if I stumble on a solution I will pass it on

With all due respect, I get output at 24hz with 4K using an HDMI cable when the output is set to 1080P. See here:

what hdmi converter are you on?

Vortex, i have the voigtlander 17.5 and that's already too long but man it's money in the dark. i like em both but the rok is $500, voigt is $1100, rok is heavier but the voigt is aluminum bodied. mines crashed twice now, all dented up but works perfect. seen it bounce a good 50' up last time,,,,, onto pavement
