WooKong Luvers Care to help out a new Fellow Wookong Buddy

Welcome to MultiRotorForums.com!!
ddmt,
it's something that I designed, we're calling it the XY-quad as it has four arms but front (and back) spacing like a tri-copter for better camera views. Emo's building it as a straight quad with Avroto motors and DJI controller, I'm building it as a coaxial 8 with Robbe Roxxy motors and Miktokopter electronics.
Emo should have his flying today, I should definitely have mine in the air today.

here's my build so far

ic, I think he can't use the quad-x mixer in the DJI WKM, need to make a custom mixer for that config :)

we've been kicking that around but I think it will be fine. it's sorta of like an IQ test for the controllers! :)

Look out boys.. Emos going to be back in the shop today. Had to put WooKong on hold while I did some work, but hoping to get back in the shop today and get the WooKong Flying.

OKay still not flying :dejection::dejection::dejection::dejection::upset:
So I changed a few things just in case. I took the xy set up and went more to X on the frame just in case that was a problem. What happens is when I try to lift off it rolls hard left or right and flips really never even leaving the ground. I moved my compass closer to the center you can see two photos below. I have it -5 back and -13 on Z. I also removed the carbon arms (which I think might have been flexing) and put towel arms on.

I am using a dx 7 radio and used the flap mix switch for my 3way switch and got all the modes M,A,and GPS to line up blue when I go through th e positions. I can't seem to get the failsafe to work. It says to turn the radio off and it should light up blue well mine doesn't and i'm not sure why.
I also have not set up Auto pilot page or voltage page. DO I have to have those set up to fly?

I did get my compass calibrated. So now I am looking for suggestions.. thanks for the time.

Emo, it sounds like you are trying to fly in manual mode. I did that and broke a few props and took my finger out as well :( Stick it in atti mode and try again :) Manual mode is nasty, so I have disabled mine, so I either fly atti, gps or RTH.

Hope that helps.

HI Gunter.. your right I had been trying to fly in Manual mode.. so I thought I could switch to GPS or ATTi mode.. and be good to go but I just went and tried and broke 4 more props.. not sure what happens.. everything thing looks good then just before lift off its like the two right motors speed up real fast and it flips super faster

Emo,

Maybe start from scratch again and check all settings!

Make sure esc's are calibrated
connect to pc and check dimensions of gps etc from COG. Calibrate transmitter. Also recalibrate heli, see page 19 of the latest users guide (this may cause the problem if you haven't done it)
Make 100% sure the IMU is strapped down firmly. This needs to be fixed properly to your top plate, or the plate that connects to the booms. If it's stuck on with velcro, it probably won't work properly. It needs to be fixed solidly to the plate which connects to the arms, so that it can sense which way the heli is flying, and not wobble around. Also make sure it's pointing in the right direction and you have set the correct COG distances on the control panel.
Put it on the floor, put something heavy on the landing gear so it doesn't take off, and check all of the prop directions. Double check against the wookong user guide page 9
Power up in atti mode (still while strapped down) and check the controls, ie check it moves forward, sideways etc

If all of the above is correct, it should fly. I'm by no means a WKM pro, but I made sure the above were correct and mine flys lovely.

Also be aware that when mine takes off, it always moves slightly to the right and then rights itself after a split second. Are you testing yours in an area that's big enough? Don't feel shy to punch the throttle up a bit more to get it off the ground. You have to get it over 50% throttle before it gets enough power to take off, then reduce to hover.

Hope that helps!

Gunter.

A couple of things. If your IMU is pointing to the front your GPS antenna is not. The arrow needs to point to the front of the quad. Besides making sure the props turn in the correct direction make sure you have the pusher and puller props on the correct arms. Instead of breaking props I held my quad in my hand by the base, above my head and gave it just enough power to feel the way it wanted to move when giving elevator and aileron control.

Hey emo, I,m not sure this will help but on the hexa you have to make sure that motor 1 is centre forward and then motor two is left of that . So you are working in an anticlockwise direction. Maybe you have got your esc wires into the wrong engine ports on the mc ? It would be natural to work clockwise when configuring the engine wires to mc but this is not the case with a hexa setup so maybe double check this ?? good luck

Usually when this happens it is related to a motor plugged into the wrong port on the gyro or IMU , seen it happen many times on Xaircraft and Gauis ..
You probably have checked everything , but it is worth checking again , and also see that nothing needs reversing .
Also make sure right mixer settings are selected , again you probably have but often it is something so simple that causes the biggest problems :)
Hope you get it sorted soon .

HI Geoff...and crew thanks for the support and ideas/suggestions.. its a new day and time for a new look at my Wookong. Just been frustrating to see several having great results and I can't even get mine in the air. So I think a fresh look at what I got going on is what I need to do.
So i'll see what I can come up with.

Don't worry too much about this as it will all become very easy once you gain a little experience. These things don't vary too much from one make to another. In a short while you will have it all sorted. Can I make one suggestion, get yourself a Simulator from aerosimrc.com. A couple of hours on that and you will flying nose-in without even thinking about it.

BTW There is a simple test before you try again. Hold onto the model from below keeping hands well away from props. Then gently open the throttle until you can feel enough lift for it to fly. then move the model around a bit and you should feel it trying to stabilise itself in a level position. Then apply a small amount of elevator and aileron and you should feel it responding in the correct sense. If that is happening then you can give it a try from off the ground. If it is not then you have a motor connection fault.

HI Denny thanks for the positive feedback. Flying is no problem I take off and land nose in using only my left hand :frog::shame::02.47-tranquillity: but put me in the shop and ask me to set one up.... well now this is my first time to do that. I have 4 other quads but they all came set and ready to fly. So all my frustration is do to my lack of experience setting one up. I think like the guys above said I probably have one simple thing plugged in the wrong place.

OKay I have to make a positive post.. I finally got the wookong in the air!!!!!!!! Thank you guys so much for the help.... Gunter's post last night
really got me to thinking about my project and to take a second look from the get go. I had gotten stuck kind of half way through the build thinking it was a GPS issue. Now...I am feeling a little silly
to report it was an error on my part... and it was a motor wire plugged into the wrong place.
The good news is I got it in the air and was so excited everyone was so correct about how nice it flies.!!!!!
Thank you guys for being patient with me!

That sounds great. Did you get the the arrow on the GPS antenna facing forward? It didn't look like it in the pics.

Thanks Gunter.. really appreciate your help and patients. This was my first build and it took some patients.. but now I feel like I understand the equipment much better which will help me to be a better multicopter pilot! I hope to be posting new videos soon from my new platform.
