Wobbling cs8

Hey Kloner, the CS8 with APC 14x4.7's should fly smooth as silk. I think this is FC or ESC related. With the DJI I could never get to even resemble smooth flight with 14x4.7's and I have never flown a HFP so I cannot comment. The prop clearance is OK on the 450mm booms. I would dig into the ESC's and FC as suspects. It seems all the guys running the DJI successfully are running smaller props typically. This allows for higher RPM and the FC has an easier time of controlling attitude.

I was planning on getting a set of 13x5 anyways for light cameras so will start there, then if still unstable i'll swap out the esc set. What brand would you recomend for it? size?

Those ice escs need updated frimware - have you tried that? There is version of the firmware that works with multicopter and if you don't have it that might cause the problem. Ah, I was reading through the posts again and it looks like you did that already, so ignore this comment.

Kloner one suggestion is to check that motors are not mounted with too long screws. Especially the ones close to wires with T-motors might easily touch to coils if the screws are too long and leaking electrics to CF frame. I've seen this happening few times affecting all kind of weird wobbling.

My boss is bringing me an esc to swap out the one that's not talking to the pc anymore. it seems like something is eatiing parts as were going here

leading to kari, now that's a huge possibilty. i didn't build it. I'll tear down the one with the esc that's deaf and see if theres any sign and what the screws are like. Somebody used some kind of grey adhesive on the motor bolts. They are definately not a screw that comes with the motor cause i got those here in the bag from them all. I'll let you guys know what i find....... it's definately between the two, everything else has been changed

This heli doesn't have a distribution board but a soldered bundle of wires. Is that normal?

Kloner the Castle Ice ESC's only log until the buffer is full then stop logging. Never did understand why they don't make it overwrite when it is full. I know of several folks using the ICE 50's with the configuration as outlined in the HF post above. Sounds like it was a bit of a home brew build.

It is still logging, just no data. you can download em, look at em, and see theres nothing, and there programmed to log everything. They were working till 4 days ago i went from 4.02 beta to 4.02, then it stopped, shortly after that maybe a day later i was looking at the esc's and one went dead comunication wise. Still starts a motor, spins a prop, but.....

I'll diagnose it deeper with suggestions here tomorrow and report back. Maybe i'll drop back the firmware to 4.01 in the esc's just for a change

Welcome to my world Kloner sorry to hear you are having similar problems with the CS8. Mine is not quiet that bad but is definetly not fun to fly yet either. Also for the longest time I have been thinking that it also was a mechanical problem but actuality it was more of a FC problem. From what I have learned the wookong does not like the disc loading of bigger props in the Octo I format with the weight above the IMU. The wookong is more geared toward very high disc loading of the smaller props and the Higher Rpm motor. So the lighter the prop the better I guess, but it all depends man. Im currently experimenting with this and it seems to be true. Also I have talked to a few individuals about this problem and they all seem to see the same problem happening with the wookong on the CS8 setup. I was told that the best ESC for a wookong setup was a Simonik flashed ESC, but have yet to try them, but I have heard and seen better results in video for sure. Here is a video that I found and possibly might help you in finding someone that could help you more.

I wish I could help you more on this setup, but its just not something many people know how to get perfect in the Octo format. Good luck man anything I can do to help let me know man.

I got turnigy plush 40 amp on my Hoverfly pro XY8. nothing done to them other than calibration. Flies like a dream. You should try them. they used to be the most recommended esc by Hoverfly until Castle came out with some that worked. but it seems castle is problematic with most that use them, at least in the SRH world. TonyZ06 has em cheap and in stock so you dont have to deal with HobbyKing.

I bought a set of plush 60 from the us warehouse, took 4 days to get em

The next time i'll be sober enough to look at this i'll have a fully flying sj8 with hfp and plush along with this cs8. the cs8 board will be back from hoverfly by then and most likely i'll have him convinced the $280 for the esc's is a worthwhile purchase.

Boss went off to Austraillia for 3 weeks, the heli leaves Saturday for Denver to a lidar tradeshow and next week i go in for surgery on my leg to remove a bunch of hardware causing problems. It's almost like a vacation, hahahaha this pos cs8 mother....... ya know

Changed out the esc in question and put some 10x5 props on it,,,,,,, no gimbal, no weights and it looks better, but a similar deal. in manual it seems to run fine, just unstable. Put it in atti and it does all that fancy cutting out and unstable.

I just tore it down to look at the motors. The motor bolts go in and come out the back side around 1/32",,,,,,, the one bolt hole is straight under one of the winding "ends" and appears to be raised from the bolt.......... That'd be the too long of motor bolts problem right? does just putting in shorter screws in that hole make it better or is there a likeliness the shield around that where the bolt went in is compromissed? They have heat shrink the bolts are going up into

I'm not electric specialist but i think it's totally possible that coils are compromissed after pushing and possibly shorting them with bolt. I would first try with shorter bolt and if that does not help replace the motors that are affected.

Another vote for the Plush ESCs. Once you program 'em, they just work. (Knock on carbon fiber.)

the set for my sj8 came in yesterday,,,,, they are nice looking. Wires seem small, but i can get past that if they work.

I'm sure you know this, but for everyone else reading this: Make sure you program them all to Hoverfly's specs recommended in their manual. It easy to do with a programming card (which are like $7).
