Panasonic G7 Arrived

I have not moved to 4K video yet, first I was going to get the GH4, then I was considering the Sony A7S and then I heard about the G7 for $800 with kit lens. I had already tried setting up a borrowed GH4 but was not able to get video out converted because the GH4 HDMI output is not compatible with most converters.

Well, it looks like it is the same thing with the G7. I can get playback to output but not live view.
I think this is going back to Amazon unless someone can enlighten me to the correct HDMI converter.

I have never had an issue with a GH4 outputting on the HDMI port. I've used standard 5.8TX/RX with the standard "white box" Hdmi/composite converter. I've also used the GH4 straight to my Connex in HD HDMI all the way.. never an issue.

Are you sure you have the GH4 (or G7) set to NTSC, and that your converter is NTSC?

Also try a few different frame rates. Sometimes you have to start the camera and VTX in 23.9fps and then once it's working you can switch frame rates. This was the case with my BMPCC and Zenmuse gimbal.

I never did see an option to choose NTSC on the cameras, but the converter is set to NTSC.
I know it is the output of the cameras because when I switch them for my Sony Nex 7 I get an image.
I will snoop around the menus again. I no longer have the borrowed GH4 and the G7 has two frame rates. 30 & 60

Also check to see if the G7 has "TV mode" I know the GH4 has a mode it must be in to work.
Hope you figure it out.

Ohhhhhh - Also, depending on what converter you have, you may have to power it with 5V. mine is always powered by 5V, so I'm not sure if the GH4/G7 has the ability to power a converter. I know the NEX5/7 did. Just another thought.

OK, I will fool around with it. Yes, I have 5v coming from the Immersion TX but it didn't help with the GH4 and I did not try it with the G7.
I will now
Thanks again.

Good luck with your new Hexacopter, I have built one 650, two 800 and one 1100.
Thats enough rigs for me for a while

I was considering this camera for the Tarot X6 I'm building so I'll be very interested to see if you can get video out.

Here's an update:
I have not been able to get video out. Sleepy C, yes there is a TV mode and when I switch to that I do get a video signal to the monitor however it is only the menu, no live picture.

Did you try starting up the VTX with the camera set to different fps? The Black Magic Pocket Cam Zenmuse will only transmit if you start the camera up at 23.9fps. Once it starts then you can change the cam;s setting and it keeps working.

I'm finding more and more confirmations that this will not output live image. It's going back to Amazon.
I've had it with Panasonic, I'm sticking with Sony and will get the A7rII when it is released, enough of this consumer crap.

Welcome to MultiRotorForums.com!!
Sony cameras power the HDMI converter via the HDMI cable, I don't believe Panasonic cameras do though so you'd need to power the HDMI converter through an external source....i may be wrong, will actually be trying an HDMI converter via a GH4 tomorrow so i can report back or someone can chime in.....i'm using a Kopterworx HDMI converter which is very similar to the white box units that Sleepy mentioned.

Not all the converters work from amazon or ebay although they look the same. I have 4 - gh2, gh3 and gh4 cameras and they all work.

Send your hdmi converter back and get one from another vendor. Read the comments & find one that works with the gh line. Or buy one from a multirotor vendor.

Also, I do not supply power to any of mine. Gh series supplies power. All work in 24p, 30p, & 60p.

Bart, thanks, please keep me posted. I'm sending this G7 back but borrowing a GH4. The last time I tried I could not get video on it either. I snipped one of the usb cables that came with the white box converter, luckily the power lead is red, is that all I need to hook up? I have a 5v power lead coming out of my Immersion TX but will I need to hook up a negative too?

Strange because when I change cameras from the GH4 for my Nex7 it works, I then plug in the HDMI cable to the GH4 and it does not. Must be settings in the camera? I can go to TV mode on the GH4 and then it does output just the menu. The same thing happened with the G7

I sent back the G7, Pany confirmed it will not output HDMI live, only playback.

I have the GH4 again and still cannot get it to work. A while ago someone suggested getting a blackbox converter and I tried that and when powered with 5v out of vtx I got a live image but distorted. Messed around with the settings and now the distorted image is rolling. I am dumbfounded! everything I have done in building these freaken things and I can't get a simple HDMI output converted to be able to transmit.

I have tried every suggestion and I am getting no where. And then when I throw the Sony Nex7 on it works perfectly. I can't believe I am the only one having this problem, which logic dictates I am either doing something wrong or some component is defective (but only when the GH4 is hooked up)

I don't understand. Can anyone chime in on this?
I can't believe the only solution is get buy a $1600 HD tx and bypass the hdmi conversion.
