New to the forum, building a Cinestar6 + WKM

Hi Guys, I'm new to the forum here and loving the info so far, very helpful. After playing around with a Gaui330 and a home made quad for a while, I've decided to build something decent. I'm also a photographer and do a fair bit of aerial work from real choppers but getting tired of how much it costs. So I've chosen the Cinestar platform to lift a 5 or 7D, hopefully by the Wookong. I chose the Wookong over MK because the plug&play was attractive and didn't want to trust my own soldering and fiddly open circuit boards holding $5000 worth of gear in the air.

I have read a lot about the struggles of WKM and larger copters but pretty excited about the results some of you guys are getting. There's some amazingly stable footage getting around at the moment. Here's my gear,

  • QC3328 motors
  • DJI Wookong
  • Turnigy Plush 40amp ESC's
  • Afropower board x 2
  • APC 14" props (realize I might have to fiddle with prop sizes)
  • DX7 with AR7010 (hope this works, if not will buy a DX8)
  • Photoship One 2XPT mount (for the time being)
Anyhow, I know I'll have struggles and questions along the way so thanks for the advice and help in advance! Does anyone know of any major issues I might face with the equipment I've chosen? I guess I'll find out soon anyway!

Hi Ross , what receiver is yours as I am sure not all Spektrum receivers will hold 2 channel presets for Failsafe .. The more basic ones only remember throttle position like the AR6100 etc .

If you plan to use the power module, hook it up on the bench first and make sure it's working correctly, many people have had issues with it. Make sure to measure the voltable on the connection to X1, some people have found it to be much higher than 5 volts resulting in some ruined equipment connected to the WKM, such as receivers and camera gimbal servos. If the voltage is OK make sure to set up the monitoring correctly in the Assistant software or leave it disabled, incorrect setup is worse than leaving it turned off as it may well decide it's time land about 3 minutes into the flight!

On my CineStar 6 I've found the biggest props it's able to use and remain smooth are the APC 12 x 6 thin electrics, and so far the best flight performance for APV has been with Graupner 11 x 5 Eprops which are a very similar blade profile to the APC thin electric. The standard APC slow flyer props have resulted in the worst stability along with larger props sizes, i.e. 13 inch or larger. This applies mainly to large craft like the CS and the 700 mm Y6/Hex frame I was flying the CS on prior to the CS. I also have a small quad with WKM, about 550mm, built on an MK frame set with Coptersky landing gear and 2 axis GoPro mount and it flys quite nicely with 10 inch graupners and nearly default settings.

You will need to initially set the basic gains to at least 200 and decrease the ATTI gains to 80 or less as a starting point to see how your setup is going to fly, DO NOT try to fly it on default settings and make sure to be in ATTI mode for the initial flight. One thing I have found with WKM and large frames is that it tends to be quite unpredictable if you try to fly it for the first time with the default settings and in manual mode. In order to fly the CS in manual you will need basic gain settings in the 250% range with a large percentage of expo on the TX, otherwise you may well find it uncontrollable once its off the ground, so use ATTI mode for the first couple flights to get a feel for it.

One other thing that comes to mind, get some form of external power for the camera gimbal, don't use the power feed from the WKM ports. I use a CC BEC Pro to run the Photohigher AV130 on my CS with the voltage set to 6.2 volts, it's really the only way to provide enough voltage and current to digital servos when they have to move a heavy camera on the mount.

If you have any specific questions about the WKM and CS you can PM me, I've got quite a few hours of testing and video recording on mine so far and I'm still working on the ideal setup for APV in any wind conditions. You'll find the CS to be an outstanding platform to fly in no to little wind and it becomes a real beast as the wind picks up, not the fault of the CineStar frame, it's the current state of the firmware for the WKM. I will say the current release of 4.22 shows a lot of promise for smoother flight in all conditions on large frames from the limited testing I've been able to do with it so far.

Hi Danproud,

i would personally try to mount the GPS module further away from the Lipo/s and the cabling. I cant find the video at the moment that demonstrates the problems but when drawing from the LIPO magnetic fields are created influencing the digital compass in the GPS module.

You probably got a spare mounting boom clamp for the MK gps with your CS6. For example check out how ken mounted his WKM GPS module on his CS6. I think you would a on the safe side doing it like that !.

Would you care to explain how this works exactly? Not the bec I know how that functions, but the actual wiring setup!

Hi Wbrown,

you supply the bec from your distribution board or distributions wiring whatever you have, with power from the Lipo 4s 5s 6s directly. Than you connect the 6v output directly to your servos. So both servos roll and nick get the 6v from your one bec. The actual servo signals (so the yellow cable from the servos) connects to the WKM MC for example to F1 & F2 incase of a hexa.

Waiting for the ESC's now. Doing as much as I can without - shifted GPS, started on power distribution using 2 power boards, 3 ESC's on each. Hope this works ok...

ESC's

Well how FRUSTRATING - the ESC's I ordered 2 weeks ago on ebay never turned up and the the seller just ended up refunding my money. What a waste of 2 weeks!!

Anyhow, now I can't find anyone with the Turnigy Plush 40amp ESC's in stock. Can anyone telll me if one of these ESC's from Hobby King would work for my CS6 Wookong?
