What would you do - Internal vs External Wiring ?

This is my sketch of my Y6 that I will soon start building (parts are arriving daily).

Today a nice big roll of 14awg wire arrived and I realised if I extend the motor wires by 400mm each thats 18 x 400mm or 7.2meters of wire.

This is obviously going to add a substantial additional weight just to enable me to run the motor wires inside my aluminium booms.

If I however run the wire down the outside of the boom to the speed controller and mount the speed controller out on the boom also I will probably only have minimal extensions if any to add. BUT its going to look pig ugly with all those wires cable tied to the boom...

So my question

WHAT WOULD YOU DO... UGLY AND LIGHT OR PRETTY AND HEAVY ???

I had the same thoughts, but went for the wires inside the booms. I don't like too much external wiring...saying that, I don't think I have used a huge amount of extra wire.

A benefit of external wiring is that it's a lot easier to assemble and replace parts if needed...

Pretty and slightly heavier. I am sure all that wind hitting the wires and esc's will create turbulence and lower efficiency.

Inside and neat.. If you are going to do this commercially your MR has to look the part not like something thats been thrown together based on a fag packet design!

This is my problem as well, but seeing as these things are butt ugly anyway, go for the external wiring, you can always put a cable guard/tidy over the top of the wires. If you're adding 7.2mtrs of extra wire....thats an awful power loss & means reduced flying times due to needing to use more power to over come the wire resistance, just my thoughts of course, it's your choice....tidy or duration?

Just realised you are my closest MR flyer...Newquay is just down the A39 from me in Barnstaple :tennis:

I run my wires internally but I don't need very much extra wire when I do it. Probably only an extra few centimeters per motor if that.
