Multirotor idea

Take a look at the picture below. I'm thinking if this would work in theory. I'm looking for redundancy in case a speed controller or motor takes a crap mid flight. I don't want to build a X8 due to reduction in efficiency due to 4 motors being in others prop wash. I fly using a Naza M lite so a true octocopter isn't possible.

In a nut shell, two motors on each arm spinning with same rotation, Y-connected together to each of the associated ports on the Naza. Setup as a quad X configuration. Thoughts?? Has anyone ever done this?

I don't know enough to comment on if y-connecting is even possible, but it seems to me that even if it was, the "inner" and "outer" motors on each arm would be always spinning at the same rate, although they are different distances from the COG... I'd think one of the two motors would be effectively wasted in that scenario. Hard to explain, but I'd imagine the outer prop would have to provide more thrust than the inner one to get the same amount of roll? Which would make me think the outer props would be underspinning all the time and not add much to the equation? For pitch, it would probably be fine. My guess? Good front to back, bad side to side. That is, if the wiring even works.
