It's time to put my toe in the water

I have been lurking around the pool long enough and it is time to to test the waters.
For the last two months I have looking at various forums and the like after discovering multi-rotors during a lazy Sunday afternoon trawl through You Tube.
After countless videos of people injuring themselves in new and inventive ways I stumbled upon a video that showed the Parrot AR Drone.
It peeked my interest.
After I learned what it actually was I dug in a bit further.
Now I am HOOKED!

I have very little RC experience clocking only about 3 hours with my $30 Kmart mini-copter and some time with RC cars in my youth.
But I know which end of a soldering iron not to touch and can tell the difference between red and black, although left and right is sometimes an issue.
So I am looking to build a multi-rotor that will a) take a bump or two, b) be easy to pilot, c) give me something else to do with my hands, and d) as a designer, look dead sexy.

I look forward to all your help and constructive criticism, and to one day meeting some of you in an open field.

Morning Odo / guess evening down under Welcome to MRF.

I know NZ is a big place but there is a growing community down there. Check out Matwells threads. I would say he is your first port of call coz he is your local supplier and may be able to help you out with a trainer.. For me its a Gaui. The new 450 looks nice and seems to be a tough looking animal. I am a lover of my little blade mCX2. tough as old boots and a great little hele to get your thumbs working in the correct direction! Its a indoor hele but I have had it out on still evenings.

Any how welcome aboard you'll find it a great place to learn and everyone is super helpful so any questions just holler
