Frsutration and the forums

First of all, let me begin by saying I'm guilty. What I'm about to ask of you, I've got to ask of myself as well because I'm guilty.

A while back I posted that the reality of the situation with Multi-Rotor Helicopters is that they can be awesome but they can also suck. A lot of times they can be both in the same day. Frustration levels will run high when one guy is saying a certain combination is great and another guy, with the same stuff, can't fly a simple hover.

To everyone, I ask, stay calm, remain civil, and we'll all help each other to work through it. My love/hate relationship with my MK stuff is a perfect example. One day it's perfect, the next day it's smoking in the sun. I posted that I am absolutely DONE with MK when in reality I'm still flying MK and will likely finish the back up with MK as well. I"m trying to learn why I have the problems I'm having and it just boils over sometimes when the money spent doesn't represent a certain level of success or consistency. Quit, I cannot. So, persevere, I must.

OK, enough Yoda speak. I ask for everyone to remain civil and not use my example as a model for future posts. There's a lot of info to be shared so let's just try to do it in a way that remains constructive so we can maintain an atmosphere where everyone feels that help is available.

One last thing, I'm not the kind of forum owner that will chastise someone for asking a question that has already been answered. Yes there is a search engine but a search can be pretty useless without the exact terminology and sometimes a new guy just won't know what to put in there. Therefore, EVERYONE, please feel free to ask questions. It only takes someone with the info a second to post it and the next time someone else will post it, and someone else the next time. I just joined the PassatWorld.com forums and they've got a major stick up their butts about people using the search function before asking questions. It's a major turn off and I'd jump ship for another forum in a second because they're so uptight. We're not like that here so all you newbs, jump in, don't be shy, and ask me again what the hell an ESC is and how it's supposed to get power from the batteries when there's eight of them!

That's it for now. Get those contest entry ideas together and get to work. EVeryone smile, it's a beautiful day outside and we're all here helping each other out.

I have a different approach. let it all out...vent. then say sorry afterward and feel better. Maybe there should be an emoticon for feeling hormonal when posting. Or how about just HWP. That will let us know to take the post with a GOS (grain of salt).

We have a right to be upset when we spend $15k on toys that crash and burn without reason. Imagine what will happen when the FAA does start to approve air worthiness for these drones. They are going to cost $3 times as much and have remote kill switches, altitude limiters, beacon signals and who knows what else. So the frustration has just begun. but who knows, maybe not. maybe only kids under the age of 21 will be allowed to do this commercially since they have incomparable reflexes.

As a moderator I sometimes think I should jump in to some posts but they usually sort themselves out. I think this is a model example of how a forum should be with virtually all members sharing and helping the best they can. There are one or two that I feel are treading a very fine line. I am watching and will act with Barts permission to ban the culprits if they go to far out of line. BUT I think we can count the number banned since the forum started on one hand. For any forum with the members we have I think that just goes to show how well Bart has set it up and how the members in general have been self regulating and keeping the spirit of help and harmony top notch.

the ***** of it all is some days on a daily basis you see the exact same question being asked in the same forum, just look at the dji sub forum, at how many threads are there for the gps and how to set it up, or issues with gps, props. etc. its kinda hard not to get jaded at people that are to lazy or incompetent to do a simple search for their problem, instead of adding to the pile.

Bart...you are right with every word....but we are only just humans. BUT there is a difference if someone just explodes because of his faulty equipment, or if two guys wanna cut each others throat.

I think you need a little controversy from time to time just to liven things up a bit. There is a lot of experience across many platforms here, and people work a lot better if they can bounce a few ideas off each other. No body minds if DJI get a little bashed up when they are not perfect.

I agree that the atmosphere here is generally very positive and productive. But that's not to say that the outcomes of threads/conversations are always satisfactory.

A few things have surprised me - like I recently posted a link to a Code of Conduct published by the largest independent UAV organisation (AUVSI) and got zero responses. Sure, some people probably downloaded it (and, I hope, printed it and stuck it on their wall) but no comments - nothing to say about it all? I found that odd. Everyone wants support (that should rightfully be coming from the manufacturers/dealers but obviously isn't) but it seems the community has limited patience/stomach for wider issues with, undoubtedly, great long-term significance: like legislation, licencing, safety and so on. By extension, threads like the current spat over Chris Anderson's attempts to write himself into the history books - again I'm surprised at the limited participation. Apart from pure profit, Anderson's agenda is also to get himself into the "inner circle" of UAV policy making - you don't find that scary?

One of the recurring difficulties with forums is the potential conflict of interests when an advertiser/sponsor becomes the subject of criticism over their product, support, pricing, whatever. I confess to having pulled some punches myself in recent threads, just out of consideration for The Bart and what he's achieved here. Pity, in a way, because some "industry participants" are behaving/performing appallingly and, unless vociferously called to task in public, will believe that "a few, isolated complaints" does not amount to sufficient reason to change.

Just a few thoughts - peace and success to everyone

Jes, for what it's worth, I saw your code of conduct post while I was on vacation. I actually took the time to transfer a digital copy of it over to my iPad and made my wife read it. She is always asking me why I won't take a little more risk to get a better shot (like flying over people etc), so that post was great to show her. I appreciated you posting that, and had I been at my normal computer (I was on holiday), I would have posted a thanks.

Jes - like kilby, i did read that and i did re-consider how i do things and how i would like them to look in the future. i sort of wish this forum had a "like" button similar to facebook. I would hate to have missed your post because you felt like no one thought it was important. in the future i will be more apt to comment on such a great read.
