Can you convert the DJI FC40 to 2.4Ghz control?

Hi guys! I hope this isn't a really newbie question here but i'd much appreciate it if some light could be shed on this for me. Im looking to convert my FC40 to a 2.4Ghz control system (ideally the Spektrum DX8 with the AR8000 receiver) so that i could use a 5.8Ghz FPV system as 2.4Ghz for fpv is very restricted in the UK. Is it possible to do this conversion? If so does anyone have any info on how one would go about doing this? (I expect there to be a small amount of programming involved on the transmitters part) Ive seen conversions for the 2.4 Ghz version to this radio but is there any difference for the 5.8Ghz FC40? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

i'd use futaba since it does sbus and makes it easier. You just buy the radio and plug it in per the naza manual..... futaba 8j is a great link, same with the higher end FASST and FASSTest series like 14.... has sbus2, telemetry, super nice

Awesome thanks for the reply! Is it hard to programe the receiver to work with the 3 position switches to how they would be on the standard remote? Also would it be possible to use the gimbal control lever with this radio?

yea, 8j is 8 channels and if you wanted both gain trims and gimbal control, i'd shoot for the 10j or 14, the 14 is worth the extra money.

the 14 has all 3 way switches, 8j has 2 3 way switches. I really like the airplane versions cause it has ratchet throttle, that lets you find nazas 50% throttle which makes it easier to hold a steady altitude on command. i sand the middle of the ratchet just a hair to keep it from being jumpy but to still feel the 50% click.... without that your at 47%, 51%, kinda going up and down like a yo yo instead of clicking it into alttitude hold...

Okay sounds like im going futaba then! So to be clear if i wanted both gains and gimbal control id need the 10 or the 14? But i could run the 8j if im only interested in gimbal control?

correct.... i fly 8j and 8fg which got replaced with the 14,,,, the 8fg and 14 have rear sliders for gimbal control, the j series has a small dial on the face... might make a difference to what you prefer,,,, the rear sliders are ratcheted but again, that's easily adjustable on these,,, little sand paper takes care of it. if left alone it makes notchy tilt pans, without ratchet it can fall down on ya by accident, the dial doesn't have those issues but it makes you take one hand off the controls to make the same move.

Also how simple is it to configure the failsafes for the phantom? I only ask because i know you have to configure them for the spektrum... will they just work out the box on the 10J?

pretty easy, the directions come with the radio and there is online manuals... you just follow it

I converted a friends FC40 to use a Futaba T8J a couple of weeks ago. You can set it up to have it like the std, so one switch for IOC, one for GPS/atti/manual, plus you can set up another switch for forced failsafe/return to home. I then set up a nob to use for gains or gimbal control, and another switch to use as an 'altitude hold' function. His was for the same reason - UK based so need 5.8 for FPV setup.

Its a great radio, and will give a solid signal to 2km or so (as far as I get before returning on battery worries on my F450).

If you want any help with the set-up just PM me whilst its fresh in my mind! lol
