Photo comparison of DJI (New?) / Gem Fan Props (including CF)

Hello! Just in case anyone finds it useful, I'm including some face and edge shots I just took of a selection of props I've been testing on my F550. From left to right: - DJI 8" 8045 that came in my F550 ARTF kit in March - not sure if new or old style, but thinking maybe old (see why...

Gem Fan Nylon/Carbon Props: Are the hubs really THIS off balance!?

So far, every online dealer I check is either sold out or, more irritatingly, only has clockwise blades but no CCWs. I have not yet found even two dealers I could use to split an order to make a full set. Really frustrating. As I understand it, the 10" hole size is right. The 8" ones will need...

Gem Fan Nylon/Carbon Props: Are the hubs really THIS off balance!?

Oh, great. So Gem Fan carbon fibers are about the best current option until the dust settles on Graupner?

Gem Fan Nylon/Carbon Props: Are the hubs really THIS off balance!?

Is there a reason why Graupner 10" props are virtually impossible to find in stock - at least in the US? Every source I check is old out right now. :( - Aaron

Gem Fan Nylon/Carbon Props: Are the hubs really THIS off balance!?

That's good to know! I might go with the Gem Fan all carbon fiber ones if I can find some assurance that they don't suck. :) - Aaron

    VERY strange reception/electrical issue(?): F550 w/8" vs. 10" props

I'm on 10" props with 3S. You can read my other post here about the prop balancing, actually: Gem Fan 10" Prop Balancing Insanity I've just flown with the glue-gobbed "balanced" Gem Fans as of a few minutes ago. A tad noisy, but seemingly stable. Going to keep testing them gently over the next...

DJI F550 - Do I need to program / calibrate my ESCs?

Heh. Sorry I didn't clarify that it is a stock F550, so DJI ESCs and question answered! :) - Aaron

DJI F550 - Do I need to program / calibrate my ESCs?

I've been tweaking and flying my F550 for the last week or so. Last night, though, I was reading a thread on one of the forums talking about the critical step of programming (or calibrating?) one's ESCs during the build process. Somehow, I never heard a peep about this process when I was...

    VERY strange reception/electrical issue(?): F550 w/8" vs. 10" props

Well, one update to my update: It turns out I actually AM still getting flickers of the lights on my other circuit even though the system is flying decently with the now balanced props. Things aren't erratic anymore, but I definitely saw the lights flickering. I don't know, again, if we're...

Gem Fan Nylon/Carbon Props: Are the hubs really THIS off balance!?

I'm using a DuBro balancer and have had quite good luck with it. I'm balancing the props mostly to reduce vibration as much as possible since aerial photography is what I do most with the F550. I might go ahead and see what I can do with a set of the Gem Fans - even if the balancing process...

Gem Fan Nylon/Carbon Props: Are the hubs really THIS off balance!?

I bought a dozen of the $2.00 Gem Fan Nylon/Carbon-Reinforced 10" (1045/1045R) props last week to use with my F550. Everyone has been scaring the crap out of me about the stock 10" DJI props (though I'm hoping the ones I have are the newer type) and opinions seemed decent about these for the...

    VERY strange reception/electrical issue(?): F550 w/8" vs. 10" props

So a quick update on this issue. I got a 5000 mAh battery with 65+C rating and everything tested fine today, more or less. I also balanced the props - hubs and all - last night before today's first attempt to use 10" props again. After it flew so much better this way, I tried my 30C batteries...

Naza GPS - Slight back/left drift before solid hover

Just so I understand, what kind of "reboot" are you all discussing? If drifting, land it, reset power and immediately try again? Or are you using the term "reboot" to mean a

Phantom Naza vs. Standalone Naza/GPS Kit - How do they differ?

I had a Phantom for a few weeks and really did love it. Unfortunately, it had an internal meltdown (wiring short, we think), went back and was fully refunded (I have photos if anyone is interested). I was hooked by then and decided that, instead of another Phantom (for now - would still like to...

Quick wiring question so I don't fry something :)

Thanks! I'll start with just the signal and see if it works, then add the neutral if not. - Aaron

Quick wiring question so I don't fry something :)

Cool - thanks for the diagram. So the black / negative wire from my SportBEC can run to the Naza gimbal pins even though it's associated with a separate battery from the one feeding the Naza and the motors. Correct? Thanks! - Aaron

Quick wiring question so I don't fry something :)

I built a separate circuit the other day that runs my lights off an independent 2S battery. It includes a PicoSwitch that lets me flip the lights on and off from my transmitter. Works great! The goal, though, was to eventually include my digital servos for my gimbal on the circuit, too (not...

Naza GPS - Slight back/left drift before solid hover

I've not tried shifting weight, no. I'm adding some DIY landing legs later today along with my camera gimbal and GoPro, so I'm going to need to readjust everything from voltage warnings to probably the compass settings again today. Once the dust settles, I'll see where I'm ending up in terms of...

Naza GPS - Slight back/left drift before solid hover

I will give this a whirl. It does seem to stop drifting during a flying session, but I need to pay closer attention to whether it corrects just after several minutes or between landings/resets. Thanks! - Aaron

Naza GPS - Slight back/left drift before solid hover

Absolutely! But it just stands out to me that it drifts off so many feet before hovering when the Phantom I had (based on the same Naza/GPS) seemed to stop pretty well dead with phenomenal reliability. I don't recall it doing anything this pronounced. Thanks! - Aaron
