Hero GoPro3 Black Edition or Sony Action Camcorder

There appears to be several fit-for-purpose options for MultiCopter HD video recorders in the light weight category, i.e., under 100 grams.

The following appears to indicate the Sony to be a superior choice...... but I haven't found any online aerial videos of both so as to compare accurately.

http://www.cultofmac.com/188250/sony-action-camcorder-beats-gopro-with-hi-def-and-slo-mo/

Sony offers 1920 @ 30 fps but Hero GoPro3 Black edition offers 1020 @ 60 fps.....
GoPro does not offer image stabilization.
Sony interface might not allow easy i/f for FPV and/or OSD .... :dread:

Which is the better fit-for-purpose camera for aerial video for small to medium sized Multicopters?

we had a compression specialist come by a thread at fpvlabs and computer analyze the cameras compression and forget the term, but when a camera gets forced to take a whole new frame..... the consesus between below was the order of which they were performing

nex-5n
hero3
nex-5a
hero2 protune
as-10 and 15
hero1

That's as far as the camera keeping up with the modes it supports....

starts with that earthling guy. i sent him a bunch of raw vids to analyze.

Got my micro sd cards today so can do a test. The hero 3 black is obviously going to win on compression, but the Sony may be better in other areas. Let me test.

Kloner,

Putting the FPV issue aside.... which of the ultra light weight video cameras provides the most professional HDTV output results?
Specifically between the GoPro3 Black edition and the new Sony Action Camcorder. I will do FPV separately and need best possible video quality to download after the flight.

did some flights that the discovery wore both cameras to the same parade and i posted the vids. I've flown the as10 alot, been on my disco since it got here.

as10

this is two different craft, but same spot one flight after another. This is the favorite job for as10, but the hero aint bad

Kloner you need to be gettin' paid for all your hard work and helping people out. I think you should get the forum guy of the year award.

After seeing Meme's videos from the black, the bar has been raised quite a bit for gopro professionalism. I would also say, go gopro over the Sony. Perhaps the Sony has stabilization over the gopro but that's not enough of a reason.

Farout Kloner!

I have no intention of flying that far, but (I am a noob) did you fly that track shot by way point or by video monitor? Surely you couldn't possibly have been flying by direct sight , that thing musta gone a mile and a half!

Biggles.

i'm dying to get my hands on the black........

I fly long range FPV through a 7" monitor........ my planes been 8 miles away flying around, can do alot more if i wanted. I'm more into long low passes over stuff

The sony is over saturated in color. Sometimes it looks good, but it never looks like it did to the naked eye when you were there. There hero is a dead ringer.

The IS in the as10 never worked for me. it just makes jello no matter what. It's nothing like IOS in the nex linemore hero2 protune

sony as10

Kloner, you can try my black next time we go out. I am constantly amazed by the quality coming out of this little thing. I am a bit disappointed with 2.7k as it seems to skip frames every once in a while. 1080p 60f is awesome, and once i get the jello on the TBS frame figured out, it will be golden.

Another note (kinda off topic) is that lower light definitely eliminates my remaining jello. Exact same setup with mid afternoon light and dusk light had moderate jello and no jello respectively.

monty, you need a filter,,,,, i had a link to some cheap stuff that makes it like memes.... but can't find it. i used that polar pro polarized filter a long time and it was similar, but also killed glares.

Yep it's on my christmas list ;) Probably going polarized, 2 f-stops of light reduction and will help with glare.

I like Sony's image stabilization, but the camera needs better mounting options. It's pretty light until you put the protective case on. Plus you'll have to work some magic if you want to mount it without the case.

like the first part of this clip, see the cliff looks like were on acid........

gopro cameras all make alot of it without attention spent making it go away. At least to be consistent

With respect to aerial videos, what does jello mean?
It's the image sensor in the camera getting vibrated while it's trying to write the information. Kind of like trying to draw a straight line on an etch-a-sketch while driving down a washboard road.
