First build :D need some advice please

The SunnySky x3108S 720KV motor is looking good but I'm having a hard time finding a battery and propellers to match, one small change makes all the values change so drastically :upset: in eCalc I'm using 11x4.7 at the moment but I'm guessing I would need slightly larger? You are also right about the costs, that shocked me quite a bit xD although there are some cheaper carbon fiber props on ebay (new). The flight time is also very low (under 10 mins) which is worrying me. Would I need a second battery pack for longer flight times?

I don't know if it's the mobile device messing up the link - but the eCalc just takes me to a blank page (very annoying - since I paid for it!).

What so you mean hard time finding battery/props to match? In eCalc? It's just a guide anyway, so don't worry too much about the times. Sometimes they are scary accurate - other times they've been off my 10 minutes. Pick a 4S, say 5000mah battery at 35c (can be less if you can find them). You will want a few. The 11x4.7 will give you about enough lift for a basic build. Moving up to 12" would give you some additional payload.

Keep in mind you'll need some other things for this build. Prop balancer, soldering iron (hopefully decent one), battery charger, connectors, silicone wire etc. this will all have to be included in your first build if you don't have them already.

Yes that works. Sorry for the hassle. I'm a little frustrated with that site right now.

Those numbers look great. And of course you can always change the size of the props a bit for different lift/efficiency etc. the only suggestions is make is to maybe up the ESC to 30A or more. Size/weight/cost will be minimal and give you a little more headroom and keep them cool. This can prevent heat - which on these systems is translated to loss, and potentially lost flight time.

Also, the batteries you should be looking at are about 35C. They can be less, but you definitely won't need more.

A few batteries I found:

ZIPPY Flightmax 5000mAh 4S1P 30C
http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__8588__ZIPPY_Flightmax_5000mAh_4S1P_30C.html
£20.75

Turnigy 5000mAh 4S 25C
http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__9179__Turnigy_5000mAh_4S_25C_Lipo_Pack.html
£23.03

Turnigy nano tech 5000mah 4S 25-50C
http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbykin...gy_nano_tech_5000mah_4S_25_50C_Lipo_Pack.html
£30.98

Think I'm gonna go for the cheapest as it has really good reviews... and is cheaper :D
For the propeller I think ill go for a 12/5.5 CF (some are not bad prices at all)

All this gives a lower hover throttle at 30% though, not sure if this is ok, but everything else seems to look good. Here is the eCalc sheet for it:

30% is way too low. You need to add weight or find more appropriate props/motors.

The cheap CF props are typically....well, cheap. Very tough to get balanced well, and won't offer the benefits that are often associated with CF. If you are married to CF, do some research on which Tarot may be good for your build. They aren't cheapest, but at least you'll have a shot at getting them balanced.

Would another battery give longer flight time and add the extra weight needed? or should I just change the props/motors like you said?

Edit:
Maybe something like this? its 51% with longer flight time now.

Those numbers are looking mighty fine. Ideally you'd be at 50% with one battery, unless you plan to run 2 every time. Just means you'll want more batteries. :)

That looks like a very good place to start.

Remember all the extras you'll need to order - many can be had from HK, so you'll save on shipping. Connectors (bullets/XT60/JST etc), silicone wire, solder, soldering iron, heat shrink, and a prop balancer (Dubro or Top Flite are the top choices) for the CF props will be a must. There is other stuff too I'm sure - but you get the idea.

Alright so a bit of a list update is needed I think. There are still some parts I'm unsure about and I changed the motor/prop combo slightly. Do I need a power distribution board? And also does the spektrum dx6i have enough channels?
I have a decent soldering iron already and some heat shrink so I should be ok with that. Am I missing anything else?

I would think about going with the Nano-Tech batteries. Very good reputation for cheaper batteries.

I'm not familiar with those ESCs. Did they come recommended? If not, do some research and see what people are successfully running with those motors. ZTW, turnigy plush, f-30a are all cheap and can be tweaked for multirotors.

For the transmitter - you're not going to get better bang for the buck than a Taranis. Get the package with the X8R receiver. If you have the Spektrum already - make sure you have a receiver that has as many channels as possible. You'll want at least 8 (or more with sbus).

You can make a "squid" to distribute power. If you want to buy one, witespy sells decent one where you're getting multiwii.

Order a bunch of 3.5mm bullets (confirm motors/ESCs are 3.5). I suggest XT-60 for the batteries if you want "cheap." I use Anderson Powerpole. Grab some JST connectors for powering FPV, gimbals, etc. also get some servo leads. All this will be used and come in handy. Most can be had cheap from HK.

Well, this is the updated list with your recommendations. I have been hearing a lot of good stuff about the Afro ESC's, would they be worth checking out? they seem very popular. Also that total price D: maybe if I close my eyes it will go away haha.

If you close your eyes long enough the price will definitely go up! :)

everything looks damn good. The only thing to add is a few more props. At least 1 each direction. Better if you had 8 total. Props break - and carbon fiber break the easiest. And at that price, some may be impossible to get balanced well. Better to have options instead of waiting for weeks for 1 part...

the only other thing to add would be the program card for those ESCs and some servo leads and extensions, as well as some JST connector ends. All this should be pennies.

Ok so, most of the parts are now on their way :D I'm just holding back on the batteries so they aren't sitting around for too long. The only other part I haven't got yet is the FPV stuff. I ordered a telemetry kit from the same place I ordered the flight controller however I am having a few problems working things out with it. At the moment it connects directly to the flight controller to provide flight data to be shown on screen (I think), however I also want it to transmit video from a GoPro. I can get a cable to connect from the GoPro to the telemetry kit, but is there any way I can also get the data from the flight controller as well? I have seen some videos on youtube of people overlaying the FPV with the data: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcu0InU2kGw
Not sure if this is a silly question but hey :highly_amused:
Thanks!

Not sure which telemetry you have - but you usually the data you may be looking for is done via OSD. it plugs in between FPV cam and your vtx.

So for some reason Sunnysky isnt selling the motors right now (not sure if they will at a later date or stopped all together). Is there any other motor makes you can recommend? I have already got my props (12x4.5) so I kinda need to build it around them. This sucks -.-

Is sunnysky not shipping at all?

Ive seen people use the multistar (HK) and Tarot versions that probably have a similar spec to the SS motors. Quality may vary.

i don't have personal experience with either.

Not sure, but every page on their website has "Sorry, no found no data" and every other company that stocks them is out of stock and have said they are not sure when they will be shipping again. I don't think they are currently shipping any motors.

The company website has been like that forever. Bummer if the retailers are thinking they may be out of stock for a while (or forever!).
