Voice radios

What voice radios have produced good results for pilot to camera operator communications? There is too much lag or delay to use cell phones. I am also looking for earpieces that don't have a mic boom. VOX is a must. Back in the 80s I had a set of radios from radio shack that had VOX and an earbud that had the mike built in that picked up your voice through the ear canal. They worked great. We used them for motorcycle touring and they were able to distinguish between our voices and the roar of the bikes. Of course I can't remember what type they were or find anything like it now. Everything I find has a boom mike. Thanks

I just picked up some midland gxt1000 radios. They have VOX but find it does not activate reliably and the ear/boom mic that come with it really suck. They just don't fit so we have not used them. There are some throat mics available and acoustic mics, but I have not tried any. I need to find a better headset for these!

I have had the same issues with trying to find a reliable system. I find there is quite a delay time with walkie talkies using vox and ear+mic setups. I went so far as to go to the music outlet here in town and see if they had anything that might work outdoors, much like the systems you see used on reality TV and such, but those systems cost a lot of money, require extensive intermediary equipment, and they didn't carry anything like that.

I was really hoping that my iPhone would have the answer using FaceTime. With two iPhones on FaceTime you're always "on". Communication is instantaneous. I have not yet experimented around enough to see if its a viable solution, mainly being that you need wifi for it to work. Also, I don' know if it can operate without internet access. If all i needed to do was take a decent wifi router to the field to make this work than no issue there. I have an extra one laying around and have my ground station ready to power it up. Also, I assume a standard headphone with built in mic would work with it. Anyone else tried this or perhaps other iPhone solution. I expect that for my operations i would be at most 100 feet from any other person on my team.

I own a landscape maintenance business and use Peltor WS Alerts. They have a boom mic with built in Bluetooth to connect to our phones.

Although I can't recommend them for lag free communication, Peltor does make 2 way boom mic headsets with VOX or remote PTT. The thing that makes all the difference is the boom mic. No matter how much noise the audio is crisp. Thus making VOX much more reliable.

The cheaper route would be GMRS radios with remote PTT somehow attached to your transmitter for ease of use.

The more secure and reliable route would be either Motorola or icom radios with digital comms. No static, no interference and good range even without a repeater.

For snow removal that's what we use (Icom Idas radios) and the portables have Lapel mics.

Hope that helps!!
