thinking about DJI

Brand new to the hobby and very intrigued by the possibilities
I've been thinking about getting a DJI Phantom or other RTF multi-rotor for some fun and landscape video photography.
but I'm stuck on one simple question -
I'm a bit confused about the FPV/WiFi transmissions. Do these units rely on my router's SSID or does the transmitter or receiver establish it's own WiFi network?
i.e. to use the FPV do I need to be near an accessible ground based WiFi network or can I take the transmitter and receiver "into the field" and use FPV?

Hi Hi! Just had to say that... :) You do not use WiFi for FPV on most platforms although there are a few low end units that do. FPV commonly uses a 5.8GHz band and less frequently a 2.4GHz band. The 2.4 band requires that you use an R/C transmitter that is not transmitting on 2.4GHz like the vast majority of transmitters do which is why 5.8GHz video transmitters are so popular. So no, the simple answer is that you do not need to use WiFi. Hope that helps... :)

Here is a video series (9 parts) that this guy did called "Success In FPV" that explains FPV very very well....
