Tethered MR Flights - does anyone use this technique

Other strategies for powering a Multirotor from the ground!!!
I was able to visit NRC - Canada in Ottawa back in the early 80s where they presented an electric RC glider that was powered from the ground using microwave energy beamed up from a tracking satellite type dish!
It was something like this: http://books.google.ca/books?id=G-M... mechanics microwave powered aircraft&f=false

see microwave powered aircraft article in above link..... also.
http://books.google.ca/books?id=dQE...ar science microwave powered aircraft&f=false

But IMHO still completely impractical for a number of reasons.

I design and build industrial automatic wire winders (with tension control) in my day job. Seems like it would be a great application in this case. Could keep a nice light tension on the line, with no slack to flap around in the wind.
