Hoverfly setting failsafes

Well it finally happened, I flew too far away and lost connection with my Spektrum DX8 (yeah, I know - not smart.) I had the failsafes set to AL and throttle set one percent below hover with the payload I always fly with. I assumed that if I lost signal the helicopter would hover slowly down, remaining basically level. Sadly, this did not happen. When I lost signal, the unit spun and accelerated upward, then tilted to about forty five degrees, angling into the ground hard about one mile away.

I've finally repaired the considerable damage and I'm wondering if anyone has actually tested their failsafes on a HFP? It would be great to gain some confidence that the failsafes will actually work when needed. Any advice appreciated.
