S1000 with A2 in Greenland - Satellite reception concerns!?

Hi Everyone,

I'm bidding for a job in Greenland and want to be sure there is sufficient satellite reception for my S1000 flying an A2!? Has anyone flown there and can you share your experience?

Any other information regarding flying in cold temperatures (avg +2 degrees), gps calibration issues so close to the north pole, funny flying characteristics etc would be greatly appreciated!?

We will be flying near Tasiilaq on the eastern side of Greenland.

Thanks in advance!

Easy? You call that easy?
GPS reception will be probably be fine. It's only in the arctic circle itself where problems may exist. It would be the compass that would be affected rather than the GPS in any case.

Lipos will fly for less time in cold temperatures so just knock 30%ish off your usual flight times to be safe.

It's the A2 you should be worried about! :nevreness: Lots of negative reports about it at the moment.

There's a few people on here who have flown 'up north' so hopefully they will chime in soon...

Lec has flown our S1000 in Finland, April this year, up at 68 degrees north. About the same latitude as you plan. No problems encountered, watch batteries are kept warm and fully charged. Lec usually flies for around 6 minutes max and in Atti mode rather than GPS.

Wow..cool. One of my friends wanna go to Greenland for shot. But worry about the battery performance.
Which brand battery you use ZAxis?? Have to store the battery always warm?? Any special warm case to keep the battery?
Thanks for help!

Hi ZAxis,
I think I've asked you already about flying in extreme cold but think the question got lost as you were helping me with something else. Anyway, good to know OK to fly that far north but was wondering about the extreme cold and how to keep the batteries warm, how did you manage that?

You can get battery warning bags from hobby king. They are big Lipo safe bags with heating elements in that run of a Lipo aswell. I sometimes also use a microwave 'hot water bottle' in the peli case with my batteries.

Sent by my thumb, a trusty slave to my crazy mind. The above is the ramblings of a lunatic, and should be treated as such. Terms and conditions apply.

I'll check those out, thanks.
