Please help with some maths... (or math in the US!)

Hello Ben,

For a 5.6kg AUW and: MT2826 / KV550 motors. When a 14x4.7 or something like 13x6 is used, enought thrust is generated with 6 motors (you'll have approximately 880 gr extra payload capacity). But with this combination, you will notice that your gas stick will be at 3/5 position for hovering (upper than the mid point ). Since we aren't flying 3D, it works perfectly, and the copter will move like a tank in the air. But in case you need very urgent extra lifting power, you will wish that you had bigger props installed. Some pilots are comfortable when the hovering gas stick is in the middle position.

I'm using MT2826 with 13x6 props with 4.8kg AUW Y6 copter. I'll upload a video tomorrow, you will see how it moves in the air. I like the power I have with it and I am comfortable with it. Since I don't like APC props (because I have hard time balancing them), I'll try JXF 15x6 props on my Y6. My arms are long enough to handle 15" prop. So, I'll add extra 2kg thrust available to my copter and I'll have plenty of power in the muscles in case I need.

Moving to higher KV valued motor is another option but the outcome is nearly the same. You will need to put on a smaller prop in diameter and will have nearly the same thrust. For instance, let's put MT2820 / 830 KV in place of MT2826, without changing anything. By only changing the motors:

* We will have extra 4400 gr payload capacity (previously 900 grams)
* You will need to change the ESC with a 60A version.
* Flight time will be around 9 minutes (9.5 minutes previously)
* Hovering power will be the same since your lifting the same weight.
* Full throttle power will be more than twice.

If you put 12x3.8 props on MT2820, your hovering power will be same again. Your payload capacity will be the same with 14" / MT2826 combo. ButI think, flight characteristic will be changing. 3.8 pitched prop will alow you more smooth ascend /descend.

So it's a matter of choice.

I have 4 spares of MT2826. I'll be using it on my DJI W-M quad soon. It's equipped with MK3638 motors which hasn't seen the ground from the sky. First I want to give the MKs a stunning feeling, then I will replace them with MT2826s.
