New and want to DIY my own quad

Hi Everyone!

I have been flying a small quadcopter for a few months now and also have a 200 sized blade helicopter. I really want to start getting into recreational aerial filming, slowly, and want to build my own quad versus buying one that is pre-built.

The only issue I am having with this is making sure that number, I purchase all the parts I need at once, rather than having to do several orders. And number two, making sure the parts that I purchase go together and I won't break anything.

I am going to post links to what I have decided on purchasing already and if you guys could let me know if I am missing anything or if parts that I have will not work together...or any input at all, would be much appreciated!!

Motors -

HK Multistar 20A ESC

Power Distribution Board

Transmitter / Receiver Module

Flight Controller w/ GPS

I know I still need a Battery, which not 100% sure on what size / type I need. I am also not sure if I am going to need any additional wires or supplies of that nature? Am I missing any other major components?

Again, I am very new to doing a DIY quadcopter and really want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row before pulling the trigger on this.

Thanks everyone in advance for all of your help!

You don't need the power distro board, that frame has one built in.

Personally I would go with 30A Afro ESC's, much better.

Not the FCU I would choose for a beginner but if you are happy with it then fine.

Grab a 4S 3000 Turnigy pack or three, 25-30C will be plenty, you will also need a suitable charger.

You may need a few male to male servo cables depending on what comes with the FCU and a maybe mounting screws for the motors.

Don't forget the props. Depending on the battery you go with will determine the diameter. Knowing what I know now, 4s would be ny choice.

Just a question Pete,
what is wrong with the FCU I have chosen for a beginner? What would you choose, and why?

Thanks!!

While Pete sleeps on the other side of the world, I'll chime in my thoughts even though you didn't ask. The Multi Wii is inexpensive and comes with a GPS which is a positive. On the negative side you need to write what are called "sketches" and it takes some fiddling as well as computer skills. Myself, when I was a newbie, I wanted something that would get me in the air pretty fast without a lot of fiddling around. I also wanted something that was going to be pretty bulletproof, steady flight, and I wanted with at least a modicum of quality. I've tried KK boards and for goofing around they are fine. A lot less hassle than the Multi Wii to set up. But my first flight controller was a DJI NAZA M Lite with GPS. Very simple set up, very steady flyer, and I still have it in service on my 450 quad to this day. It even survived a plunk in a lake in 5 feet of water. That would be my choice.... Your turn Pete... :)

Hi Lauren,

Sleeping and moving out of the house so our renovations can be completed.

Very hard to beat the Naza for ease of setup but if you don't need the extra features or the cost is too much and you just want to fun fly then have a look at the Naze32 or the Naze32 Acro, been using these on minis and they are easy to setup and fly very well.

You just can't beat a Naza or Naza lite... naze/KK etc will work, but you will outgrow them and want better very quickly, that's if you can be bothered to ever get the multi wii in the air.

Is buy kit that will make it easy to fly to a good standard strait away, that will also last well.

Battery wise is be thinking 4500 mah 3s should give you 15 mins flight time or so. 20c or greater.

Sent by my thumb, a trusty slave to my crazy mind. The above is the ramblings of a lunatic, and should be treated as such. Terms and conditions apply.
