There have been actual MR's that have carried a person and an actual electric single rotor heli that can carry a person.

They do need the battery technology to take a big leap though.

Ultra Caps and Thorium. Just read this great sci-fi book, and all the vtol vehicles run off ultra capacitors which are then recharged by mini thorium reactors. Darwin Elevator, great book, somewhat of a unrelated tangent. The website says this thing gets 20 minutes in the air but they hope to get an hour plus in near future.
