Marking for Orientation

We all know about being disoreientateddddd :) I know thats a word somewhere...

I have seen folks put balls as markers for orientation. I want to do that. With a carbon rod out the front. I just what type of ball or material to use. I tried using a Spray paint top and cut some foam to fill it up then drilled hole thru the whole thing. Attached it to the rod then put zip tie in front and behind. The issue is when in forward motion the wind pushes against the foam and the zip tie and it will eventually push thru the foam then for sure the lid will hit the prop and its all over :)

Any suggestions appreciated.

Welcome to the wild wonderful world of multirotorforums. As I have been starting to fly a dual operator setup I realize the greater need for something that differentiates the heli from the gimbal. Nothing like the stress of flying in a controlled environment and having someone else spin the gimbal in circles. I am thinking about using a tent pole type setup on the rear. the problem with balls and tape on the ends of the arms is that they are at risk flying in the props AND they dont have enough parallax to keep your eyes from going crossed. Think of a single rotor heli and how it has a very defined front and tail. Thats kinda what we need on these. On a one person operator heli you can just put pool noodles on the gear and that works pretty well.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. You have a good point. I actually took a vert tail fin from a 500 heli and put on the tail end. I also want to mark the front.

At this point I am just having fun with it. It's a dji 550 flying wheel hex look a like. With a kk2 board with LCD. It's really stable. Flys good and it was the cheapest way in to a bigger muliti. So far I like it. Have not flipped it yet. Just got about 4 flights on it.

Thanks

cap,

last year we got the kids a ping pong table and it came with these awesome orange ping pong balls. i nabbed one and set it aside to do exactly what you're talking about but just never seemed to find the right LED to put in it. I was going to put it about 2" out from the back of the heli on a piece of tubing and run wires through it with the LED in the ping pong ball so it would glow really brightly and define the back of the helicopter without being out too far and in the prop wash.

just an idea.

Hi Folks

I got this setup working really good.. Unfortunately couldn't get out of a loop in time so I had a impact with the earth... Broke two arms.

Ordered 3 additional air frames for spare parts today :)

Nothing Greenbacks couldn't fix. I used a horizontal stab behind the foam of the paint lid to reinforce it. Keeps it from getting shoved back. I then used a Vertical Stab from the same 500 sized heli and put it on upside down and backwards for the tail I am going to paint it orange neon.

I also am going to replace the 3mm carbon rod with some 3mm carbon square tube. That will keep them from rotating. At least for the tail.

Works good so far.
