Maintenance of motors?

Just a sidebar to this conversation. Ive seen so many videos of guys taking off from a beach or somewhere in the desert. All that dust kicking up makes me cringe. Why don't these guys keep a 10 x 10 canvas tarp in their truck to launch off? Boggles my mind.

i'm guilty of buying stainless bearings but i've also bought cheap bearings at RC shows and they worked fine.

best indicator of bearing wear seems to be noise from motors but feeling them for wiggles in any particular direction contributes to the final decision.

When a bearing dies from contamination the result can be quick and catastrophic. Just wearing out is a whole different story. You can get a years worth of signs it's time for new ones.

Good info, thanks guys.
Reckon I can tackle the motors with confidence now :)
Does there exist here, a list or a discussion of service tasks with recommended intervals for a typical pro level MR? I am keeping a log of flight times and watching for degradation in the batteries etc but difficult as its previous history is vague to say the least.
