Is this a good FC?

The APM line of products is definitely robust, but there is a learning curve. Also, the series has progressed now to the pixhawk - which I believe has some features that may not be available on the older hardware.

It really depends on your willingness to research and learn the system. It's certainly not as plug-n-play as some of the other options - but for the feature set, is much cheaper.

As with any of these products, dealing with a reputable retailer is helpful.

Here's the real thing for $160:

The clone is $100 less and includes a GPS. Some clones/copies work okay. Some are poop.
DIY Drones forum will give you some help with a clone.

The Pixhawk forum is a stickler about supporting only genuine Pixhawks, etc:

If you decide to go with a real 3DR , consider the Neo M8N GPS. ($60 -Drotek)

But for a LOT more features and current support you may want to consider a Pixhawk:

But I agree completely with what Moto said: APM and Pixhawk are not the best beginner FC if you have trouble juggling multiple inputs.
