Hexacopter Design

Hi All,

I am doing my school school project on Hexacopter design. This will be a UAV, battery operated and mounted with a camera for taking photos.

I am not familiar with the components that I need to gather information on, like the autopilot system, speed controllers, types of motors (brushless), props, etc.

Are there any websites that have some detailed information about how these components work and what are the best brands.

Any advice will be of great help.

Thank you in advance.

It really depends on how much you have to spend and how sophisticated you want your UAV to be. Basically you will need a frame, which you could make yourself, six motors, six ESCs, six props 93 clockwise rotating and 3 anti-clockwise rotating) and a central computer to run everything, plus a transmitter and radio... and maybe some more stuff if you want it 100% automated, so it flies a per-determined route on its own.

When you use brushless motors, as pretty much everyone does now, you need Electronic Speed Controllers, one for each motor, to tell the motor to spin properly - they (the motors) won't work on their own. Technically an old-fashioned brushed motor also has an ESC, but it's not really the same thing. I made a page about it here: http://www.rcflying.co.uk/tips/brushless-motors.html but you don't really need to know that stuff, unless you want to put some tech stuff in your school report perhaps for extra kudos. :)
