Help with first build / purchase

Hello,

I'm new in this area with multirotor flying but I have been flying "normal" rc-copters for a while.
The reason I'm looking to get into this is that I want to start taking photos and videos from the air and found that this is a very very good way to do it.

Since I am new its very hard to know what to buy and what would be the best for my needs.
I have done some research and found out what is possible to do with these amazing copters but I'm not sure how to assemble the most optimal build.

What do it want?

I want a solid copter for aerial photography, I want to be able to view what the camera sees in real time and I want to be able to control the camera as well, rotating it and if possible stop / start recording and taking photos on demand.
Was thinking of starting with a smaller platform that could fit for example a gopro since its a bit lighter and from what I understand it makes for a cheaper platform.

I am able to build it from scratch with the right parts or to purchase a finished product depending what you think would suit me best.
My budget is around 2000€ for the whole project, and that has to include everything.

Thanks allot for your help!

Draceus,

It sounds like you are here for the same reasons many of us started out here.

I'll start with your bottom line. Because I don't know exactly how 2000C relates to USD, I’ll make 2 basic recommendations.

1: Group Build! This has all the information you will need to get started moving along towards your final dream. Just looking through the Videos and reading the posts there you will probably have your questions answered. Many, many, MANY people have gotten aloft with using that single thread as our starting point. Myself included.

2: DJI Phantom: This is a very easy to use all-in-one solution. I’ve watched videos and heard about people using it to start out and immediately wishing they had just purchased a kit and built their own. BUT, if you want to start out the easy way, this would probably be it. The Phantom has many features and will incorporate the final goal you have, all in a single complete package.

That being said… I’ve started out with a 550 and I’ve spent well over $2000 (USD), but I went BIG on some things and smaller on others. My initial 550 kit with gimbal, flight controller was under $800, the radio and modules, and additional $150, Batteries were $50ea, charger $25 (ebay), but since I’ve stepped up to a Futaba 14sg ($580), iCharger 4010Duo ($340) and the list goes on and on. I’m already up to doing FPV for my video recording. It’s a completely different world when you can actually see what you are recording. It makes your flights that much more efficient. That was an additional $250 for very basic/DIY kit.

So, my recommendation:

Since you said you have a solid foundation on RC Heli’s already I’d hope you would have some of the basic equipment (TX/RX, and charger). This alone could save you a considerable amount of money. Go with a Naza –M v2 OR the Xaircraft SuperX (XA-SX) (Wish I had gotten that one up front). The Naza has a larger following and you would get your questions answered much faster, where as the XA-SX incorporates a few NICE features the Naza doesn’t include. All in all, you can’t go wrong with either FC (Flight Controller). The F550 is the frame I’d recommend. It’s a little more expensive than the F450, but it also gives you more weight carrying ability, and redundancy should you lose a motor/esc in flight.

Just my suggestions and a bit of information. Hope it helps!

Ok so I have assembled a kit that ain't DIY, it got the following items:

1x PHANTOM 2
1x GOPRO HERO 3 PBE
1x ZENMUSE H3-3D
1x XTREME LINK 5.8 GHZ ANTENNA
1x DJI IOSD MINI FOR NAZA v2
1x FPV DIGITAL FLIGHT DISPLAY 7" TFTLCD
1x IMMERSIONRC 5.8GHZ 600MW V2 VTX VIDEO TRANSMITTER
1x IMMERSIONRC 5.8GHZ VRX UNO VIDEO RECEIVER
2x ZIPPY FLIGHTMAX 4000MAH 3S11.1V
2x DJI PHANTOM 2 BATTERY
1x DJI PHANTOM FPV MONITOR STAND
1x SKYRC E4 CHARGER

My radio is a FUTUBA T8FGS 2,4GHZ that I already own.

Does this seem like a good starter package? Only reason I'm buying the phantom is that it seems like its going to save me allot of work

If you could get a H3-2D zenmuse I'd suggest that. You can't really take advantage of the yaw on the H3-3D because of the fixed landing gear on the Phantom.

Fatshark is releasing their new goggles later this month, keep that in mind

MOST IMPORTANLY!!! DO NOT USE THE GoPro's WIFI!!!!!!!! Read up, I'm not going to ruin it for you... Just read up...

There are a few things that I cannot research right now, I've got a crash on my hands and have to tend to that, but it "looks" like it would all work. Is it the best for the money, I'm not sure, but it sounds like you have done some homework thus far.

I sure hope you have a BIG bank! That looks like a heck of a spending spree!
