FlameWheel F550 Motor upgrade

I would like to upgrade the motors on my F550 from DJI stock 2212/920kV to higher thrust motors to take advantage of 10 and 11 inch props and lift heavier payloads. I already have 6 motor extensionplates which add 61 mm length to each of the six arms and these will accomodate motor mounting hole sizes, 16mm, 19mm, and 25mm. Does anyone here have any suggestions for motors? I would like to remain with the stock 30Amp ESCs for now.

Hi Peter,
I was also looking for an upgrade and got the Tiger-MT2216 KV:800.
I am using 10" Props - graupner and after upgrading the firmware I've noticed more wobbling during flight. Not sure if my 550 is underpowered but i tried 3s and 4s batteries with no difference.
Let me know if you had any success with other motors or this one.

Also, I did not extended the arms, not sure if that's why I am getting the wobble. It is worse during YAW command.
My setting on NAZA are: 120 120 110 120 Attitude 120 120

Thanks,
Sergio

I guess how much of a payload you would like to do, unless you are planning to extend the arms then you are not going to be able to extend you lift capabilities with larger props. I have done a lot time with this issue. I ended up making a F550 converted more to a 750mm, I then added 14 inch props. I was then able to put tiger 3515 400kv motors. I then was able to carry a camera up to about a 1.5 lbs cam (nex like or equivalent) up to about 11 min of safe flight, meaning voltage did not hit the 21.0 threashold I set for a 6s battery.

I ended up having a real nice copter especially for aerial photography, I have gotten some decent vid off it but I am always working on getting better.

cheers

jhardway,

Thanks for the info you, and so many others, provide on this forum! My question is, can you detail what you have done to your F550 to extend it to a 750? Thanks!! It sounds like your setup is exactly where I'm going with my F550 and RX100. Oh yeah, what gimbal are you using?

Best,
Dave

After a long and tedious research project I've ordered and installed a new set of motors on my F550. Using the online eCalc program I narrowed my decision down to two units. The T-Motor MT2216 800kv or the T-Motor MT2216 900kv. The 900kv unit won with its preferred results. I spent a couple of hours last night removing the stock DJI motors and installing the MT2216's. Before installing the props I did a quick check on their vibration characteristics... amazingly smooth (!) at all speeds. I'm using a set of well balanced CF 10x3.8 props. After a few flight checks I installed the camera (NEX5N) and a 4s 70C battery, full flight weight of 2581 grams. Very satisfied with the results. Smooth video and 7.5 minutes of flight time. The NAZA has been upgraded with the new firmware and recalibrated the gimbal. My gimbal settings went from 15 - 15 to 35 - 35. The two axis gimbal is driven by two new Hitec servos, HS-7245MH.

Best regards,
Bob

I went in the Skyrover direction, and for a while even though the copter flew well, I kept running in to a problem where a boom or two would start shuttering at total weight of 4300g's+, I then changed the props out and seem to have taken care of it. However after a dozen flights I started to see some more shuttering, so I was getting frustrated. At that point I took all the props off and rebalanced them and at that time noticed that one of the props was out of shape. I replaced the prop carefully rebalanced them again and my problems went away.

Since then I have have loaded up to 4700g, basically the copter loaded with 5300 6s and a 1.2 lbs camera, have not seen any issues.

Its funny I know what causing the issue and for the design it could probably be improved fairly easily, I have talked with the designer but he has not done anything with it. in my build feed there were some skeptic that the conversion kit was going to work well, I know they are credible guys and really know what they are talking about. The problems they were talking about were exactly what I was seeing. Over all the copter is probably not a heavy lift machine like some would like to push it on to people interested in them, but its more of a good mid size copter with lots of lift power and efficient results.

I am happy with the results and at this time have been using it for aerial photography, I have had it up in 25mph winds with not issues. I am now thinking of selling it mainly because I have just finished up my large Octo.

I like building copters and writing about them, since I now have an interest in seeing what the tarot t810 is about I am thinking of selling this of to make the T810.

Over all the conversion is real nice result and I would suggest it to anyone interested in doing so, just have dot your I's and cross your t's

hope this helps

best wishes Jack
