Hi people, i'm pretty new in the forum,
i'm working to my next 8 engines configuration, all the components are ready to be processed at CNC
i'm planning to buy new motors and the market offers a wide range of models, at the moment i have the MK3638 and have to say that they are pretty good, nothing to say abouth quality and price.

I'd like to know if there is something better in performances or with the same performances better in price, is there anyone that has experience on different motors and can say who is the best?

I'll do aerial shooting so I need no vibrations, high payload, good stability in time.

The highest quality motors available comparable to the 3638 are the AXI 2814-22, not the cheapest but certainly one of the best, I use them on my Cinestar 6.

do you think that AXI have less vibrations than MK? more payload?
on the paper hey look pretty the same but all the producers tell that theyr products are the best ;)
so I'm interested on your direct experience

If cost is no object, the AXI motors are expensive and good quality
For the money (less than half per motor), the Tiger motors work great and run smoothly.

Can vouch for the axi 2814/22 as well. Make sure they are short shaft and long lead. You can get them from most quadcopter specialists. Electricwingman.com always has stock. I really like the DROIDWORX edition ones as they are black and silver.

You can also go for the plettenberg 15-20 .. The best motors on the market. These are industrial motors hand-build and dynamically balanced!

Around €180,- each and build on order! You have to wait quite sometime ... But it's worth it.

By the way ... They have the best power to weight ratio! Around 3.2 kg of trust with apc 14x4,7 at only 170 grams!
 

Ive got to be honest, been using e-max BL2815/09's for about 9 months and never had an issue, and they are only £13 each, that's not to say I wouldn't run AXI's if I had the budget though!!!

Hi Bartman and mattew, i'm pretty courious abouth the challenge AXi vs Tiger, my impression is that these two motors are good at the same level but one is cheaper, usualy you get what you pay so does someone had occasion to try both them and can give interesting feedback?

my goal is to have the best solution possible for professional aerial shooting, considering to lift up a RED and maintain a professional control level, any tip and suggestion is very wellcome

do exist other producers of motors that can develop on demand?

what abouth the other solutions? cheap like e-max or troxpower...

Even though I am only a Noob here too, I have noticed a few things: novices talk about quality components, whilst pros talk about quality hardware config and placement, integrity of wiring, balancing, pre-flight checks etc. I think you could have two identical setups built by two different people with different experience levels, and you would find that one is clearly a better platform than the other. I would stretch as far to say that a well-read builder and pilot could use "affordable" equipment over "pro standard" equipment and achieve a better result. Its the little things that seem to seperate the "OK" platform from the gold standard.

Hi matthew, what you say makes sense but i miss the conclusion, i can see your point but it goes a bit far from what i'm trying to understand
i mean that the motors for a multirotor are maybe the most expensive part, especially if you have an 8 engine, if just want to have fun you don't need to spend so much energy to find the good product, I told already that MK3638 are very good engines
my case is a bit distant from "just fun" i'm working hardly by 3 years to reach the performances I need and the only way is try, ask, read, invent, spend money and hope!
forums are a good place to collect informations and direct experiences, developers and vendors are not fully honest, they have to sell mainly and frequently they research and develop using our money, in several cases they promise performances that never are true or use therms like "professional" for stuff that is just amatorial
datasheets at the same time give partial informations, you can read a lot abouth a motor but no data sheet tells you how well is balanced the engine or how much life time it has if you push it to the limit constantly and so on, for that kind of info the only way is ask people that use the hardware in your same way

great motors won't help much if you don't figure out the subtleties of set-up and operation which can be quite different for every pilot and hardware combination. I spend two to three hours for a new set of eight propellers to get them balanced using a combination of spray paint and aluminum duct tape.

Hi Bartman, i usually spend a lot of time to balance propellers
i come from old helicopters field, with gazoline engines, there you really have to spend a huge amount of time to check and balance everithing :D

i assume by defoult that if you want some particular results you have to spend a lot of time to do small annoing things that give you the step forward that in some cases is essential

but one more time, considering all these things, balancing is fundamental, probabaly xoar props are even better than APC ones for reduce vibrations, build a good frame is essential too for stability, vibs reduction and so on, electronics is MK for sure, i just miss engines, have to understand if keep on buy MK ones or jump on something better, i have to lift up a lot of weight and need good flight-times....not so easy
 

I hope my previous post didn't come off as insulting, that certainly wasn't my intent, I was trying to put across that there are many examples on the forums of builders using ordinary equipment and achieving extraordinary outcomes when they pay attention to the little things. i explained more in depht just to avoid misunderstanding, and yes you are right when you talk abouth people that takes ordinary elements and gets good results but afther that you start to need more quality or clients ask for more and is the moment to go back on develop and not ever you can fix problems with cheap stuff...btw thanks for share your personal view

what is the weight of the RED? I thought it was 6 pounds plus a lens.....no?

an awerage weight is around 2Kg, considering the gimbal, the frame and all the other elements it should go to 7-8 Kg total

at the moment with a cinestar 8 with cinestar gimbal, a 6600 4s lipo, APC 14" and a gopro the flight time is around 7-8 minutes...too much weight too less time, new motors are needed, cinestar system is absolutely the best in terms of fredom to customize but it's weight is a pain

with a RED the flight time can drop down to 4 minutes and all the hardware will be stressed enough, engines for first
 


Orbit 15-20 is the best I have come across so far. Very powerfull and extremely efficient for 160 grams of weight.

hi cinerebel and redridinghood, this motor really looks different than all the rest
i have a question now, what abouth energy consumption? does it lift so much weight with the same amperes of an MK3638 or similar class motors? or does it need more power?
the expense is more than the double of MK ones so if this motor has the same energy consumption but lifts 3.2kg and is dynamically balanced and hand made, so very well checked before to sell, this price can be reasonable

one more question, on the link of plettenberg there is no 15-20 engine, it stops at 15-18, is this a particular version assetted for multirotors?
