Bad motor or bad esc ? Which came first ?

Can a bad motor knock out a esc or can a bad esc break a motor?
The motor is 2212 1000kv (not sure make ) and esc is 18a hobbywing funfly.

I have tried both with different esc and motors but both broken .

Any ideas please ...

A bad esc can fry a motor and visa-versa. As nothing is fused a short will take everything along with it. So, it becomes hard to say which happens first.

thanks for that .i am alway happy to get help and advise from seasoned multi-men like yourself.
i have replace with fresh esc and motor and back flying now .
