Anyone tried an X8 as a dual quad?

Had a thought today about an X8... what if you run in quad mode but feed the two motors on each arm the same signal, and they spin the same direction? This would still offer redundancy, and perhaps cut down on the turbulence created by coaxial counter-rotating props. Maybe the lower props would need to be a different size/ pitch to compensate, or even a slightly higher KV motor?
Thoughts?

Pretty sure it's been done and works fine. Thats kinda how the X12 works, I think. It's in hex mode but has 12 motors. They counter rotate. Why would you do this over having 8 motor outputs other than the extra few wires? The X12 only does this because controllers are currently limited to 8 motor outputs.

I was thinking it might increase efficiency, cut down on the noise produced by coaxial setups with counter-rotating props, and be simpler for flight controllers to manage, while freeing up motor ports that could be used for gimbal outputs on some controllers.
