The key word is "surveillance" what is considered a surveillance drone? some fool in some office will state "as long as it has a camera it can be used as a surveillance drone" Think about this for a moment, right now if you had a accident and your bird falls out of the sky and hits someone, you might get a letter from the FAA, you might get a police report against you and have to go to court and pay a fine, you might be caught up in a bogus lawsuit. Laws will be tighten up, congress and the FAA will have something to say, but we all still will be able to fly. Now think about this, you get a Chester the Molester ( pedophile) and he or she takes their "hobby quadcopter" to a park to film the little ones, all hell will break out. The FAA will move mountains, congress will roar, and our little hobby will take on a different life form. Restrictions will be tight, licensing required, insurance, background checks the whole nine yards. So what is considered a surveillance drone? there are many meanings to the word surveillance, the question is do we fit under any of thoses meanings, will some fool in Washington or even your state mix words and turn this hobby of ours against us?
Whats interesting about these stories is that the government is starting with the local governments. They are going after Law Enforcement is a big way. These are the same people who we trust to protect us. So is the government saying they can't be trusted? Should we trust them? What has happened that the government is so hell bend on stopping law enforcement from using drones? Yes there are privacy issues, but what else is there? Is the government attempting to lock up the surveillance market with their own spies in the sky? Who knows and who cares?
As for me, my quadcopters help me relieve the stress of the work week. I enjoy slapping my Go Pro Hero 3 on my quads and just flying around filming interesting items. I enjoy doing something with my hands and other skill sets that gets me from behind my computer at work and home. I've had people ask me if I can take pictures of their homes and businesses for a fee. I've had people just question me for hours about the Quad. Its like my motorcycles, I have numerous bikes, but only three attract the attention that my quads do. My Monotracer and my Can Am Spyder and my baby a 1935 Fully restored Indian. I can spend an hour getting gas at the station on anyone of the three, because people want to talk about them. But you know what, I'm having fun with it. I would hate to lose my fun time because some idiot wants to take my quad away or make it so unabearable to fly, because it might be a surveillance drone.
Forgive me for my ramblings, I just realized I was going off the deep end. This is our hobby by choice and by wallet. Let's have fun with it, and don't let the big brothers of the world spoil our fun!
