3DR Iris or DJI Phantom FC40

Hi guys, I'm new to RC aviation but I'm intrigued buy Multirotors. I've been doing research on the best way to get into the game and after hours of reading blogs and reviews and watching every Youtube video worthwhile, I've come down to the FC40 and the 3DR Iris.

I examined building my own and though I love to tinker, I think that I would end up spending way too much once I got rolling. Plus, I just want to get to flying asap. I was looking to keep it under $500 which put the FC40 right in my crosshairs. Then I did the research and the 800 lb gorilla came in the room.... FLYAWAY!!! aka RTC, lmao. I know that it's no laughing matter but that is absolutely ridiculous. (My deepest sympathies to those who had to take that kick to the groin.) I couldn't fathom watching my hard earned hunskies fly off into the sunset!

I've heard it's 100% user error, power lines, cell towers WiFi signals from Gopros and on and on. Some say they've flown it twice and then bye-bye birdie. Some say they've flown it 99 times then on the 100th go-round...back to China. I've read with the 5.8ghz setup and the latest firmware it's not a problem as long as you calibrate it correctly and stay away from high-interference areas. Some say the Naza is just garbage... The fact that this still occurs tells me DJI doesn't really know what's causing it, or they do and haven't found a viable solution. Also, I hear there is no log file system in place??? As a techie, that bothers me.

So, I figure in the worst case, I buy the FC40 and it flies the nest. I can kiss my $500 goodbye. Then I buy another mulltirotor spending at least $500 more. That puts me at a grand and I figure if I just bought the 3DR, I could have saved about $250. Oh, making the FC40 more tempting is the fact that I can use my Amazon rewards and get it for around $400...

HELP! Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure if my opinion is really worth anything but I'll throw it out there. I'm no fan of DJI products but the FC40 sounds like great value and what you want. It will probably be a good start for you. If you want to learn a bit more about copters and how they work etc you will benefit a great deal from building your own. But I would say you'll spend a lot more that way as well. Good luck and have fun. Make sure to read all the safety procedures!

Hey thanks for your reply dazzab! Any input is very helpful and appreciated! What you said pretty much is right in line with my thoughts on the situation. It's definitely a great value...so long as it doesn't fly off into the ether lol. I'd really like to build one but I tend to get carried away on projects like that. My Traxxas 1/16 e-revo went from a $300 dollar car to about a $700 car pretty quickly so I don't wanna think about what I would throw at a quad.:dread: Thanks again!
