From a boat mechanics perspective, soldering is a no no for boat use. I thought we used soldering to reduce weight but I guess I was wrong.

What do you think of this for my first quad?

Wow, that's an intense radio. Futaba makes good stuff. That radio is a great foundation for future upgradability.

If you're trying to go for efficiency you should be looking at 13" props. The one downfall about the 680 hex is that you are limited to smaller props with more motors than the quad (bad for efficiency good for redundancy). You're going to have to run 4s batteries with that motor. Two 5000mah...

From what I've read the Tarot frames are really nice. I got two of the quadcopter 650 frames shipped for $218 on Ebay. There are a ton of builds on here. Read up on one and bu their parts list. I'm the type that has to tinker with everything so a RTF kit was out of the question for me. I'm...

I know you're already pretty much set on those three. I ordered the Tarot Iron Man 650. frame because it is upgradeable to a hex and also upgradable to 680mm. The F550 is a solid choice though. Come to think of it, if you decide to upgrade the F550 to a heavy lift, wouldn't it just be smarter...

What do you think of this for my first quad?

The Naza V1 is old technology but it's upgradable for a cheap price. The rest of the kit looks pretty good. I'd find out more details on the parts and do a Ecalc on it. http://www.ecalc.ch/

Yes, the F550 with Naza-m V2 is a good choice. The benefits of a 550mm hex over the ?350mm? phantom quad will be stability. The phantom does perform well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30HDdocMyAk This is with modifications. Maybe you should check Ebay on the f550 for a good used unit. That...

New with Questions. Working on a parts list.

Well, I managed to spend just under $1000 :black_eyed: wish me luck. I'll do a thread in the build section talking about the setup and if it worked well or not. Supposedly it can lift the DSLR with 81% throttle with my 550g lens on it. I'm going to get a small pancake lens and hopefully get the...

My budget is already blown with the 9x (things add up quick) so it'll have to do. When I upgrade stuff down the road I may get a better unit but for now it should get me by. Thanks for the suggestion. What do you think of the eCalc and the parts list?

Thanks Pete. The Pancake motors and 6s setups are expensive. They get over $1000 quickly. Let me know what you guys think. I wanted to go with the turnigy multistar 3525-750kv but they got expensive. Oh, Ecalc says that this can lift my DSLR (without a gimbol) for 11 minutes. I'm going to see if...

Okay I took the distribution board off. Thanks for the tip on that. I still want to go with a PDB if there is a reliable one. I'll have to look for a discussion on one unless someone has one in mine. I put the servo wires on the list. I'm confused on the transmitter. It says in the link that...

I like Pixhawk. The support seems to be there for it and the quickstart guide was easy to understand. Since it's $20 less, I think I'll give it a shot over Naza. Updated the first post. I refined a few things today so I made the changes.

I started messing with eCalc and It's definitely giving me a better idea of what I need. Earp, I think you're right. 20 minutes definitely isn't going to happen from the looks of what eCalc is saying. I'm going to check out Pixhawk right now. Thanks for the input. Some guys are building...

Hey guys. I'm building a Quadcopter for taking video (GoPro 3+ Black) on the big island of Hawaii where my wife and I will be living. I'm looking to build over buying a RTF or ARTF because I want the experience behind building and tuning it myself. My goal is to have a unit that is very stable...

Hey everybody! This is a great place.

Will do. I'm sure I will have a lot of questions as I'm trying to soak all this stuff in. I'll check out the beginners lounge. Stickies are a good idea. I'll head over and check them out. Thanks.

Hey everybody! This is a great place.

Thank you for the insight. That was an excellent response. I guess you have to weigh simplicity and initial cost against redundancy. I'm going to look into hexarotors and quads. Wow, the Red Epic is 5 lbs and expensive! It really does make some great videos though. I'm going to take your advice...
