from multi-rotor to plane...

I've flown multi-rotors a lot in the past year, but I've never flown an RC plane. Today, I made my first attempt - with a ducted fan plane.

If you've ever seen the show Top Gear, there's a line they use a lot. "How hard could it be?" they say with childlike innocence and a hint of British sarcasm. I said that to myself as I walked down the street to an empty field with this huge foam jet in my hand. To make it extra fun, there were 10mph winds. Perfect conditions for a newbie to airplanes. When I got started in multi-rotors, I was careful and precise, but today I was filled with a bit of reckless abandon.

There were several failed attempts in the beginning. The nose of the plane had this strange attraction to the ground. Good old Gravity, she never lets up. I walked back home, defeated. After knocking out some editing work in the studio, I decided it was time for a final attempt. It was dusk and the winds had calmed down. My hands were freezing. I made a valiant effort at another hand launch. Crash - more failure.

I decided I'd give it one more heave-ho as the sun dropped well below the horizon. I gave it full throttle this time, pulled back on the elevator stick, and gave it a good toss. Oh - My - God! It was flying! Thank you Lord! After a moment of sheer joy came terror. It was flying away from me, and quickly! This thing doesn't hover! I had to quickly switch my brain out of copter mode and into airplane mode. Wait - I've never flown a plane - I didn't expect it to actually fly - my brain doesn't know airplane mode. Surprisingly, I was able to fly it around for a couple of minutes doing graceless circles, but it flew. It was quite a rush. I made an attempt at a landing because I hadn't bothered to set any type of battery alarm, thinking I would be lucky to fly for 30 seconds. The landing was more of an intentional crash, but it survived.

Multi-rotors will continue to be my focus, but planes just became a new hobby.

Sorry for being a bit off topic, but I had to share this with you guys.

that's awesome ben, congrats. I've got at on of hours playing with 3d planes in my driveway, there a blast. if you get it figured out and want a solid fresh ducted fan look at habu, either of em..... the little foam one is nice, the big glass one is off the charts for LOS

That's funny, Ben. A ducted fan is not what I would recommend starting out on though! You've flown a plane on the sim first, right?
Planks are OK fun for a while, but then you have to fly really low and fast to get any thrills. With the cameras getting smaller and better all the time, it won't be long before we'll all want a fast plane in our arsenal for those 60 mph speed shots.

I started with Helis first then planes then multi`s... Must be about 17years now, The first time I flew a plane it was only a relatively cheap one but it ended up in bits after a couple of minutes flying and wondering why the rudder doesnt turn the plane properly :) So I went and bought another the next day and tried again, but this time knowing what the ailerons were for and all went well... 10 Minutes on a simulator should do you if you are used to R/C although no sensors or GPS stabilty will probably take getting used to? I was used to flying multirotors on KK boards so when I got a WKM it was really strange to fly, almost like it was flying through water? and when you eased off the stick it just stopped, took a while to get used to that.... Yesterday for the first time ever I went slope soaring which consists of throwing a plane with no motor or prop, off a cliff and then flying it:dread: Well that really didn`t sound like a good idea at the time, but let me tell you it was great fun and the hardest part and the most fun is getting it back down to the ground again, it just doesn`t want to come down, it take alot of forethought and is quite a challenge a really fun day no damage and all on one 3s 2200lipo still with power to spare. Think I am hooked on gliders now also :nevreness:

Yeah Ben, um...ducted fan and you've never flown a plane? Let's start with a Piper Cub shall we? lol... I'm going to get into the flying wings I think, they seem to be a blast to fly and people love them not to mention they are tough as nails and fast yet glide too. I was thinking Dragon Link UHF, ZII Zephyr, 1350Kv turnigy NTM motor, maybe I'll even switch over to 5.8Ghz since they have the tiny antennas. :)

Ben, what kind of plane you going to get? Please tell me it's not going to be ducted fan for FPV! Is it?

I went in the opposite direction. Been flying planes for 12+ years. And Heli's for a little while as well. Got bored of all the 40%ers and started playing with multi's. Now I'm a wackjob. I haven't had this much fun in a long time. Even just the whole learning curve is awesome. When you know every detail of a certain aspect of the RC hobby it can get a bit old. So when you get the chance to "start from scratch" it's a whole lot of fun. Learning the lingo, checking out all the manufacturers, learning about the products it's all exciting. Now I'm many months in and the whole AP multi rotor side of the hobby has rejuvenated my interest in RC.

You should buy an ardupilot board, APM2.5 that will help you learn much more in depth how all this sort of thing works, it is open source firmware and hardware, you can even make your own circuit board with all the sensors e.t.c then program the mirco-processor to control the multi although much easier just to buy one :nevreness: Also good if you build your own multi from scratch from stuff from the hardware store and use it with that... You will learn in and out about multi`s and UAV`s

I couldn't agree more and now I'm like a kid in a candy store again. I'm obsessed with multicopters and I love my Hexa and Hexas of all kinds, I'm Hex-obsessed or maybe Hexed? :) Humor :D

This plane is kind of a glider with a ducted fan over the wings. Definitely not the best to learn on, but I'm having a blast with it. I'm charging three batteries right now. I got into multi-rotors carefully. I kinda took the opposite approach here. Some time on a sim would've been a good idea, but I spend too much time on the computer as it is. I'll probably get a cub as a proper trainer at some point - we'll see. Kloner, 3d planes look like a blast!

"Stress reliever!" it looks more like a stress at maker. LOL. I really love though 1:25 min where you landed the tree! I know that thing looks like a plane, but doesn't fly like a plane I've ever really seen. Looks like a lot of fun.

Fly,crash,glue,repeat!
Nice report, reminds me of my own experiences.I bought a HK mini swift and managed to get it flying at the back end of last summer. Its takes you by suprise how quickly they get away from you,and its difficult to get your brain out of helicopter mode.
I burnt the esc on mine and only just got round to upgrading it ,and put a slightly bigger motor in at the same time.
Hopefully I`ll get it flying again this year.

Video is a bit long and dull, plust the swift is a speck at times, but you get the picture:)
