My ex-wife, the Pilot.........................<wbr>................

My ex-wife started taking flying lessons about the time our divorce started and she got her license shortly before our divorce was final, later that same year.

Yesterday afternoon, she narrowly escaped injury in the aircraft she was piloting when she was forced to make an emergency landing in Southern Tennessee because of bad weather.

Thank God our kids were with me this weekend.

The NTSB issued a preliminary report, citing pilot error: Judy was flying a single engine aircraft in IFR (instrument flight rating) conditions while only having obtained a VFR (visual flight rating) rating.

The absence of a post-crash fire was likely due to insufficient fuel on board.

No one on the ground was injured.

The photograph below was taken at the scene and shows the extent of damage to her aircraft.

She was very lucky.

The real danger in flying light aircraft is after 50 hours, when you go off and don't know what you are doing, the next bad time is at 500 hrs when you think you know what you are doing but actually you don't, the next critical time is at 5000 hrs when you do know what you are doing but you have just become complacent. After 12,000 hrs I started to think I was just one of the lucky ones. But the more time you spend in the air the greater your chances are to be become unlucky I guess. Glad to hear she was OK but she was lucky that time.

I had a mate who taught his wife to fly, when she got her commercial she flew off in the family's home built and left him. Life can be a *****.......

From Colorado, Tennessee is pretty easy to find! Just go east until you get really, really stupid, then south until your ex-wife looks good to you again!

Obviously she had a plan when she started flying and knew she was easily going to be able to afford the lessons ;)
