Complete noob needs help!!

Hi guys,

I am a complete noob for RC stuff, and have entered into the world with a DJI Naza F450 kit, which after a slight struggle have managed to build.

I was having major problems with it and had to ask a local whizz about getting it to work. It appears that I have to have the DX6i controller set to the model as a plane, as I can't set the gear switch settings to change between attitude and manual when it's set as a heli? Is this correct?

When eventually getting the motors to prime and then taking it for a flight, it managed to take off, get about 3 foot above ground then spiralled wildly out of control before crashing! Luckily nothing broke so I had another try.. This time it got about the same height before spinning manically into the ground snapping 2 of the rotors off!!

I have ordered extra sets of rotor arms as I expect this may become a regular problem, but I'm certain that it shouldnt be this difficult to fly?

I have completely dismantled and rebuilt the thing, paying severe attention to the esc being perfectly in the same positions on the arms for balance, and still no joy.

Will having it set i plane mode be causing this problem? And if so how do I get the gear switch to work in heli mode? And is there any specific settings I may have wrong that's causing it to act like this?

I have bought the full kit from quadcopters.co.uk, and with the DX6i radio and Spektrum AR6210 receiver. The battery is centrally mounted in the top, and I have checked the rotation of the motors about 200 times to make sure I haven't made a very stupid error..

Any help greatly appreciated as this is driving me mad!!

Cheers,

Mike

I have mine in airplane mode.
You should teather it down somehow so it can only get a few inches off the ground to test to make sure everything is working correctly.
When you got 3 feet off the ground was it flying lever from the ground up to 3 feet? If so, then maybe your NAZA isn't set up right.
And make sure you download, print, and read the entire manual and follow it from page one and you should be ok.

airplane mode is fine. i use the "gear" channel and set the end points in the radio while in the dji assistant calibration screen to make one way manual, other way atti

in your radios system setup menus, it should have something called device that you can enable, inh or set any channel to gyro, on some it lets you flip flop channels and there switches. might want to look there to start.

The spiral outta control thing is crazy. do you ever have control of it or it it just firing up in failsafe?

You have to make sure it's in attitude mode for your first flights. I wouldn't even try tethered hovering without it.

Hi Mike

Firstly you should definately have it set up as a Plane on the Dx6i and the gear switch controls the flight mode from between Man and Atti .
Go into TX config screen in assistant software and make sure Atti and Man can be selected via the Gear switch and they light up blue when selected , If they dont then you need to adjust the travel so they do light up..
It does sound like something is amiss with your set up , Check you are in Atti when flying , Check also things like channel direction is correct and the Naza FC is pointing forwards perfectly level .. m1 m2 m3 etc is the front..

If your still having problems feel free to give me a call and I will try and talk you through the set up on the phone.

As a noob myself the best thing I can recommend is get your self a simulator to practice with Areosim or Phoenix both have quadcopter options & the practice on the computer wont cost you any parts or waiting time. It has saved me a few hundred quid easy so far & still doing so on a regular basis.

The Naza has been calibrated with the computer, and is fine when I start it up, give it some throttle and then it will take off and just go mental!! I am going to strip it down and start again, making sure that everything is mega secure especially the Naza, and that the motor input ends are facing forwards.

The calibration is all correct and the gear switch changes between attitude and manual modes.

Hopefully this will help things, and it will take off and not go bananas..

Cheers for everyone's help,

Mike

the motor output or esc input leeds forward. says m1-m6 on the naza. sounds like you understood, just want to make sure cause the inputs are on the other end and make it go bananas if wrong.

Cheers Kloner!!! After a new rebuild i made sure the Naza was facing forward, and also attached it using the double sided pad as opposed to a bit of the velcro pad i had used.
It appears that this has now sorted it and i had a brief trial flight in the lounge to test it. takes of and was stable, but will need to wait for a full test flight as soon as the weather allows.
At present the Channel Isles are suffering from force 7 gales!!! not ideal copter winds...

Thanks to everyone for their input, I am sure that with time i will be able to get the hang of all this stuff, and hopefully i will be able to help someone else..
Also what is the best rotor to use with the F450? As i have both 8" and 10" and am not sure of what the difference is in regards of lift or motor strain?

Cheers,

Mike

For what it's worth I'm also really new to this hobby and probably just about a month ahead of you in it. I finished my F450 two weeks ago and have been flying the crap out of it. I have an F450 Naza, 3s 5000MaH LiPo, Spektrum DX7s, and Spektrum 8000r.

The one thing I did different was set mine in helicopter mode which seems to work perfect. I've read a lot of different schools of thought on this and it seems nobody can agree completely. With my settings as Helicopter, I have the freedom to move back and forth between Atti, Auto, and Manual modes.

It sounds like you had a pretty hard crash. I've had a few minor ones but so far nothing that could break a rotor thank goodness.

Best of luck to you. If you need any help feel free to PM me. It may be the blind leading the blind but I might be able to help you at least get to the point I'm at.

yea, you can't use velcro on a flight controller. aside from the fc having to be completely flat cause it self levels off of it, even an air bubble in the tape throws em off. velcro had to of been a hell of a ride.

CI must have some cool views from up above

Cheers for your input Kloner, certainly helped.. now if only this info had been in the instructions I could have had it built and flying within a few hours.. will know when I buy another!!

Im using 3s batteries at the mo, weight is about 1200g with the go pro mounted but not had chance to fly it outdoors yet as currently being battered by storm force gales!! Hopefully tomorrow will be a brighter day and I can try to see how this handles now, but it is certainly now working as its meant to..
