Afordable thermal imaging has terrible resolution. If you want military grade FLIR you'll have to pay a hefty price (not to mention the weight of those things)

Yup. In today's market great thermal is 640 x 480, and 320 x 240 is in many very expensive products. An "affordable" 320 x 240 thermal rifle scope is around $5,000 (a buddy of mine has one -- very cool). The 640 x 480 FLIR M24 is awesome, has video out (but no internal recording) and is a flyable weight, but is also over $8,000.
