MyCarbonQuad MyDesign

Here's my first quadcopter. I designed the frame it myself, with the idea that I want a platform for a camera, and a clean look. I also like to take inspiration in natur, and make the design look organic, almost like if it evolved into the shape.
I cut the carbon fiber with an electric jigsaw (with a metal blade), about 1mm from the line and then sanded the rest. If you want to do something similar REMEBER that carbon fiber dust is very dangerous, I used both latex cloves, safety glasses and a mask.

The hardware is as following:
4 x NTM 2826 1200kv
4 x Turnigy Plush 25amp
4 x 8045 props
2200mAh 40C LiPo
MultiWii 328P
2mm carbon plate (1.5mm would be strong enough)
14mm carbon tube
Turnigy 9X will be flashed with er9x
I have made some initial test flights, and it seems stable enough. I was concerned that the battery should be pulled way out in the back, but as it sits on the pictures it is in balance.
I working on making a 3 axis camera mount that will be mounted in the front.
The first outdoor test can be seen here:

Wight is okay, is was hoping for something under 400g

Total just under 1kg, I think the total lifting power of the four motors is just over 3 kg, so no problem here.

Nice!!!

What is your all in money spent ? How does your price compare with a comparable RTF model ?

Also, You might want to do wet/water sanding of carbon fiber stuff, it keeps the bits from flying so bad, should not impede the sanding too much!

Thanks!

W. Reimer: I have a link in the text for the first outdoors flight, I just made it more visible. But I can tell you that is very stable, at the default PID settings. So now I just have to get use to it.
RotoTwit: The frame is the most expensive part when comparing it to one you can buy, I think it is ~150 USD. The rest (motors, esc, remote, battery etc.) is ~300 USD.

Thx! Would love to see the finished copter w/ cam and gimbal! Detail pics of mount/anti-jelly/gimbal plz! ;)
Looks like a nice design for wide angle cam use. Is the multiwii good/stable enuf for AP ?

Thx!!

You will get the detailed pictures. What do you mean with AP? At the default settings the MultiWii seems really stable.

That's some beautiful work Kio! Great job.

I think what RotoTwit is talking about is being stable enough for aerial photography/video. Multiwii is definitely being used for AP. I think the major difference is that you dial in the stability/performance a bit more than you do on some of the out-of-the-box FCs, but then you pay a lot less for them as well, and have almost limitless options.

Kio, what type of MW board is it? I've just built my first quad as well (no custom frame... yet) using the Multiwii format.

For arial photo/video the MultiWii is stable enough, from the first tests I'm possitve that It will work fine, but time will tell.
I'm using the MultiWii 328P with default PID so far (and with ANGLE mode activated), I have to get alot of flight time before I start tweaking. I think I'll feel the changes more if I have some experience.
If you are new this page might come in handy: http://www.multiwii.com/wiki/index.php?title=Flightmodes I will be test HORIZON and HEADFREE soon.

very cool mate, can you please help me out with the wiring pictures for this board and if you can help me out am trying to make this exact flight board work on a hex f550 frame, setting and all are ok except I can't bind my receiver spectrum 7ch to it (satellite version even after binding with the original receiver then plug the sat. to the board) if I can make it work atleast I can test till I find the right settings for the motors. any help regards this flight board wiring and settings is highly appreciated.
