That video of the Grasshopper rocket was sweet. Figured it was a multi-copter from the video quality but then heard the engines at the end and I was sooo jealous!!

The last video there, the TED one, was amazing...thanks.

The TED talk just makes our poor old GPS FC's look redundant. Very cool!

Only when you consider that that system only works indoors. I find those videos interesting, but until they figure out how to get that performance outdoors, the applications are very limited. It's just a novelty really.

Yes. And... No one could create such impressive displays in a room where a cooling ceiling fan was turning. The indoors air had to be completely still.

I actually believe that system would work out side, what they did there was to create there own type of GPS system, and the copters work off that. In the beginning when he is moving it around and throwing it, the copters are reacting off the system. Out doors you would probably add a reference station to dial in the GPS. The reference station would send out the corrections for the x,y,z coordinates and then you could produce accuracy of up to 2cm. Depending on the gps unit.

its possible, its just some RF, cooper, and software, you are good to hook.

Speaking of not so responsible flight, here's a classic example. Losing control right after takeoff wasn't a deterent nor was the thick fog limiting visibilty near the ground to a few yards at best, nope, get control back and let that sucker climb until it breaks through the clouds. Would have been quite a sight if there had been a large jet airliner staring the Phantom in the camera when it broke through, and this is exactly the kind of idiocy that is going to eventually cause an incident that will result in severe restrictions on the use of multi rotors by the general public. This has to be some of the most irresponsible flight I've seen in a while, obviously a beginner pilot who shouldn't even have been flying in those conditions to begin with...

Yep.
One of the drawbacks of these cheap systems. Any idiot can buy one and do something stupid with it.

"If you lose sight of it just turn off the Tx and let it come back to you." - Stupid and dangerous.

Maybe it is just me but seems that the phantom is a popular platform for irresponsible flying

Yup, because it's relatively cheap and pretty much RTF anyone can join the fun including the completely clueless. Add to that the crap radio gear DJI has inflicted on the Phantom and it's frequent attempts to fly back to China all on its own, the end result is a disaster waiting to happen. So far in the short time the Phantom has been on the market I have seen an ever increasing amount of negative publicity involving Phantoms and due entirely to the above combined with the entry level pilots that think it's foolproof because it "talks to satellites"... :sour:

I only trust something built by myself. That way I know bugs were worked out
