Which is Better: Open Source or Proprietary Drone Software?

Here is what I was able to glean from talking to top management at 2 of the following companies:
ING Engineering in Ottawa
ChaosChopper in Swift Current
DraganFlyer - Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (seems to have had proprietary systems from the start)

Both have moved away from proprietary FC systems for the following reasons:
1) achieve highest possible flight reliability
2) get their manufacturing costs down
3) provide specific security and/or service functions unique to their main business activities, i.e., serving the following industries:

Policing, Armed Forces and Commercial.

I often times see the comparison of Apple (closed proprietary) vs Google or Android (open source). But has it occurred to anyone that the Apple _really_ took off after adapting FreeBSD as it's operating system running on X86 CPUs?
