Stepping up from a Ladybird

Hi, Keith, from VA here.

My wife bought me a WLToys Ladybird V2 knockoff for my birthday, and I am hooked. I have been wanting to get into RC helos and multicopters for a while, and now feel like I have the impetus to make it happen (not to mention the income, now that I am out of grad school!).

I bought my wife a Walkera Ladybird that she has liked as well, and we are now planning our foray into "full sized" multirotors. Our first build will be a DJI 550 that I plan to add FPV to, and use as a moderate lift vehicle for the HobbyKing beer lift competition (in the disaster class, I figure a little AP might go a longer way than any noob efforts at true heavy lifting).

My background is in engineering, and I have just invested in a shapeoko 2, so I figure I am well on my way to fabricating my own custom hex, but for now I am happy to start with a DJI ARF. Plan to use the Naza M Lite, a 5.8 GHz FPV, Remzibi OSD, and a FlySky 2.4 GHz 9ch transmitter I found on Amazon. The wife has asked to do the actual DJI ARF kit build, so we probably won't be up and running for a few months as she'll be deploying for work for the month of January, but I figure I can use that time to get the FPV systems integrated and operational, since I plan to have that be separate from the Naza anyway.

I look forward to all the resources available from the wealth of experience on this forum, as I have been a lurker for a while now.

Best wishes to all,

Keith

Hi Keith! Welcome! Not sure what part of Virginia you are in but if it's Northern VA you might be interested in joining the DC Area Drone Users Group. http://www.meetup.com/DC-Area-Drone-User-Group/ .

Everything you mentioned sounds fun and glad to hear your wife is interested as well...! Happy flying!
