Motor Selection for Y6

Hey guys, I know this is the million dollar question but was wondering if you guys could give me some input on motor selection. I always seem to screw this up and wanted some input this time around.

I've decided to go Y6 (frame TBD but I'm leaning towards the 3DR frame only because I can modify it myself later). I'll be using an RCTimer APM 2.5 knockoff to start and will probably move to either an official APM 2.6 from 3DR or a Pixhawk later on. I have leftover Turnigy Plush 40A controllers from a quad that I had planned on re-using and just picking up 2 more to save on some money. The power for this will be from 4S 5200mah. I have some 3S batteries too but I'm going to try and keep this 4S. I plan on putting a gimbal on this that will lift a point and shoot or GoPro. I also just ordered a Taranis to use with this bird. Have a Turnigy 9X with er9x that I've been using but with all the positive reviews on the Taranis I splurged.

I currently use APC Slow Flies on all my copters but may branch out to CF with this one eventually.

So that leaves me with motor selection. ~700kv seems to be popular with the Hex/Y6 builds. Not sure if I really need to dip down into the 400kv range for this build. I already know T-Motors are very popular but I'm not positive my wallet can stomach it. I've heard only good things about Sunnysky but I still have trouble picking one. I've run a bunch of numbers through ecalc but there are so many damn choices. I had been looking at the RCTimer motors from here since they are in the US and I've had good luck ordering from him:

Looks like BuddyRC might be a good location to get the Sunnyskys from? I'm definitely interested in trying them out. Anyone out there using some on a Y6 that they enjoy?

Anyone have some guidance? I appreciate the help.

I'm using the 3DR blue motors on mine http://store.3drobotics.com/products/motor-ac2830-358-850kv-1 and they seem to be working well. I'm also using the APC 10 inch props they sell as well.

Hey FlyGirl thanks for the quick response! Are you currently lifting any cameras with your frame? If you have the motors did you buy the done up kit then with the 2.6 or the Pixhawk? I haven't found too many people who have bought into that frame, would be curious to hear your experience with it.

Also are you using 3S or 4S? Looks like the black motors (the 880) are rated for slightly more lift. They say on the 3DR site that you can use up to 4S but the data sheet only shows up to 11.1V but lists what to use for a 4S battery...strange.

Hi there! Like Stacky I am using 4S batteries and carry a GoPro3+ on a Tarot T-2D gimbal. I also use the same props as Stacky. I should know what the all up weight is but I don't. It's not light.... But it jumps into the air quite nicely. I'm using a NAZA M V2 as a flight controller. And nope, I didn't do a kit. My frame is the Hobby King Scorpion which I know is kinda hokey looking but I kind of like it. LOL!

Hey guys thanks for the responses, I appreciate the input. Do either of you guys have a photo of your build you could post? I'm curious how it looks all done up with the gimbals.

It looks like if I were to keep the Turnigy 1000Kv motors that I currently have it will work on the Y6 frame but my flight times according to ecalc are absolute crap. 4 min hover, 1.5 minute flight time. Maybe I will have to go for those Sunnyskys that you got Stacky. Looks like the max power is only 180W though. You don't find that they are underpowered or get too warm after you fly?

I will try and do a photo in a day or so for you. With respect to temperature etc, my Y6 hovers at 50% throttle, even in summer the motors or esc's dont get warm.
With respect to your ecalc you might want to look for jes1111 on here, he is a genius at sorting out ecalc and it may be that you have some detail in there thats messing with your measurements.
