Mikrokopter Mikrokopter Soldering

Hi,

I'm new to multicopters and I'm interested in a quadcopter based on the Mikrokopter Flight Controller.

Everyone seems to dislike the fact that the user of a Mikrokopter FC must perform some soldering duties.

Can anyone be a little more specific -

what it is that needs to be soldered on the MK board after it arrives in the mail?

FYI:
The most important functionality I'm looking for is GPS; I need something capable of autonomously flying to several predetermined waypoints, loitering for some time, and then moving on to the next series of points, then returning back to the starting point.

Thank you,
Ron

Hey Ron,

There is quit a bit of small & medium soldering to be done on any of the MK boards you buy as a kit. Ideally you have a really nice soldering station and one of those large working magnifying glasses on a stand. You mentioned in another thread that you really didn't want to do much soldering if you didn't have to. If that is the case, you should just buy the boards already assembled because there will still be plenty of soldering left to do when it comes time to attach all the wiring.

This page will give you a good idea of what is involved with just putting together the FC: https://sites.google.com/site/mkokto2/assembly/electronics/flight-controller

I can't even imagine the time and patience it must take to assemble an okto xl distro board.

In my experience it sure was nice to just send back my okto xl distribution board to the dealer and they replaced the bl-ctrl that failed after a few flights.

Hi Ron,

Most of the soldering you'll have to do revolves around attaching motors to the controllers and the power wires to the main power board. Both of these tasks are relatively straightforward if you study a few videos about soldering on youtube first.

On the flight control board itself you'll have to attach a few small wires for the satellites to attach to the board and then for LED's and such to get power and signal. all in all it's not that bad. I go a step further and forego use of the molex cable by attaching two two-wire leads for the I2c circuit and the FC power supply.

Forgive me if I am wrong but as I understand the kits today come with the ESC's already attached to the distribution board.

I would say that is unlikely as the MK manuals show that you need to solder on the ESC's as well. Maybe some confirmation from someone that bought a kit with a distribution board?

i forgot to mention that it is a very wise expenditure of funds to order your boards preassembled. the BL's are tricky to attach to the power boards so rather than have the whole project bogged down in gremlin induced I2c errors, spend the money and have the assembly done for you.

look for the ARF option when you're ordering your Mikrokopter stuff.

Hi, this is from the MK shop page from the Okto XL kit:
Besides the standard components, the necessary parts such as cables, shrink tubing, etc. are also included. The BL-Ctrl2.0 are already assembled in the Okto XL power distributon board.

If thats what it sais then I guess it does come assembled but this doesnt seem like something MK would do. Anyways soldering on the ESC's to the distribution board wasent actually hard for me. The tricky part was soldering on the tiny molex connector.

If there isn't a significant price differential for purchasing an already soldered unit, it sounds like that is what i would probably opt for.
