I have been stalking these pages for WEEKS learning and feeding my brain a great deal of valuable information! Thank you to all who participate! I finally got to the point where I could start participating on the boards based on my experience building my first quad; albeit not a lot of experience.

After having a negative experience with an off-the-shelf Walkera 350"Pro" quadcopter, I decided to build my own from scratch. This is my first build and although I have a lot to learn, I have learned a LOT in the last few weeks since I started it. I dubbed it, the "SS Anakin [Skywalker].

I had to take that other off-the-shelf one apart and put back together so many times, I figured with some research, I could design, engineer and build my own bigger, badder beast. I was right. This one I designed and built myself flies magnificently, although I haven't taken it long distance yet. I built it so I could put a camera on it for aerial video and photography; I'm taking my photography to the next level...literally. This short flight was filmed with a GoPro Hero 3+ black edition head cam. I'll be putting the GoPro on a remote gimbal soon. The Walkera one I have from the other quad SUCKS! This is a short teaser video of a night flight for testing.

The geek speak:

  • Tarot Ironman 650 carbon fiber frame with custom extended booms and gimbal rails
  • Hive Power distribution board
  • Naza Lite flight controller and GPS
  • Taranis Plus TX custom programmed with mode voices and VR8 RX
  • Dualsky XM4010MR motors 710kv
  • ZTW Spider OPTO 30a ESCs SimonK FW flashed
  • Maytech 10x5, 11x5 and 12x6 Carbon Fiber props [trying a few until I achieve best results]
  • Tattu 6600mAh 4S Lipo Battery
  • Lipo on board low voltage buzzer
  • LED navigational lights with Turnigy remote trigger
  • HiTec X1 battery charger

More vids soon, but here is a teaser video from my first night flight after instllaing the lights as part of the last [or I think] phase before launching it on his maiden full flight!
