Flight Demo at LinuxConf 2015

Andrew Tridgell, who is the lead developer for the open source Arudpilot code used in 3DR flight controllers, did a flight demo at LinuxConf 2015 in Auckland, New Zealand last week. Not only did he demonstrate that the flight controller code could run on Linux but it could do so while the Linux system was also compiling a new kernel in the background, a task that really stresses out the CPU. So the demo was to demonstrate how Linux can operate as a type of real time operating system capable of operating a critical flight controller. This opens up some real opportunities for additional work such as image recognition to be running by the same computer that's operating the aircraft.

During the demonstration Andrew, aka 'Tridge', was actually logged in to a plane that was being flown in Canberra, Australia which technically he could have taken control of but was actually flying an auto mission at the time, including an automatic landing. The most incredible part of all this is that he actually had permission from CASA to do this demo. Andrew is well known for many software projects but more recently he participated with CanberraUAV to win the Outback Challenge in Australia to demonstrate building a plane that could autonomously locate a lost hiker.

I'm sure you will enjoy watching his LinuxConf talk.
