First build help needed

Hello, I have been building a 450 xbird quadcopter. Everything is going well and I am ready to start setting it up with Mission planner. I am using the Apm 2.6 controller. I am just a bit confused with the intial setup. Do I need to do anything special or just pick the type of Copter. Any other help or suggestions would be great.
