First filming with uas approved by the FAA

On Monday 11-10-2014 Aerial MOB performed the first FAA approved flight of a civil UAS company for hire took place in the Angeles National Forest for a project with Acura. From the FAA standpoint it went off without a hitch..... from the rest of the entities involved there is still work to be done. We hit the Caltrans wall with them not having policy to do this except whats been created by the illegal use of state roads. So were off to the races but not without a ton of work still to go. the pilot was Tony Thompson and the VO was Glenn Rauch.

me going over the operations and procedures with the local FSDO investigator...... notice the depth of paperwork and logs between us,,,,, thick stuff. For all intensive purposes this is the last guy you want to run into. I can't say enough about the gentleman above checking the pilot and VO. he and his grandson spent months building out an FPV rig and they were just getting ready to fly it when the notice came out this summer banning fpv flight from the faa. He is way into multi rotors himself and didn't leave any stone unturned. he is an asset to the community as they go legal.

two days later we performed another but can't mention the project just yet. They didn't even bother sending out an investigator....... Were off to the races

That's what happens with disgruntled employees.

we have no complaints. honestly the gov and private entities have been more of a challenge than the faa has been. All the incidents that have empowered all these to "blanket ban" filming with uav's period have been more of a challenge than anything. for instance, you can't film a public road in California with a drone... state park, lots of stuff like that no matter what you come with in regards to being legal because of all the stuff phantom jockeys have done/had happen, etc.

In the USA it is way more complicated then that simple answer.
Hobbyist- fall under US Congressional definition- good to go if you follow all of the defined standards/ guideline & usages.....Unless, you are doing something considered "dangerous" or "unsafe"... then they bring the hammer down through the FAA or local Law Enforcement.
Commercial- Now fall under 333 Exemptions, Filings & Rules set by the FAA. New standards have been proposed by the FAA... no one knows how soon those may actually become law and take effect.

Check this forum... you will find many threads on FAA, 333 Exemption, COA.

This is not a simple subject right now.

Even more complicated by the fact that still only a handful of the issued exemptions specifically state that closed set film and television production is allowed, regardless of whether that was the stated purpose of the exemption. It wasn't clear, but the Feds wanted a Motion Picture and Television Operations Manual included in the petition if you wanted that option. Just like the big boys.
