All about Gain

Can anyone give me a brief description of what the gain actually is & what it does? I hear a lot about getting the gain settings right, but have no idea what that really means, the naza assistant software gives me the impression it is to do with stabilizing. So here's my question, if I add weight to my MR (e.g. a gopro & landing skids) would I need to adjust the gain? And in which direction?

I have just put together an F450 with Naza V2 + GPS, it seems to fly fine, although this is my first so I have no comparison, I'd like to attach my GoPro next, then at a later stage (when I can afford it), I'll get a gimbal
