Foldable and/or Backpack Rigs!

Seems like foldable portable micro is kind of the holy grail and Iris Aerials was kind enough to send me a V1 of his foldable which is pretty slick. If only the time to build everything. Anyways Got turned onto these guys by Ferdinand K, they are out of control with some of the DIY rigs over there and thought I'd share. Looks like the Quad is pretty close to a release.

Merlin of Multirotors
While not exactly a mini, I have one of these which does fold up nicely and fit into a backpack, plus at $80 a bargain as C/F frames go... http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/..._Talon_Tricopter_V1_0_Carbon_Fiber_Frame.html

Currently setup with a Multiwii Mega Pro board with GPS ($85 for board + GPS) it has all the features of a DJI Naza including RTH. I use it mainly for FPV although I've seen some really good aerial videos done with tricopters.

The pics were taken back when it still had a KK2 board on it...

If the Naza had support for Tricopters I'd probably give that a try as well but it doesn't so the Multiwii does the same job for less $...

I personally like this one a lot:

A guy in Germany (Dresden) is making it in small series.....although not "very" small, but have you seen a smaller pack-size for a X8 ....? No cheap WingDangDong China-crap !

if you want it to go fast stay away from the coax, if you want it to slofly in wind, get the coax

Steve, whatever happened with those leopard motors you were testing? I see he doesn't have them listed anymore.

quite the contrair,,,,,, there the nicest motors in the class i've flown. It just took a while to all come together. They still have short motor wires but the shafts are all trimmed, has a nice prop adapter, etc. They don't do much in the efficiency category, but the smile everybody gets walking away from flying it is striking. Most people say no wonder your so good on that thing. It'll do 60+mph

them 960s on a disco is the smoothest flying fastest running disco i've ever seen. takes 8" props on 4s and she does 30mph wind like she does a morning breeze stability wise

I can attest to Steve's disco.. crazy fast and smoothest I have seen. Hands down is smooth than mine with 9" props and smaller motors. Though you get about half the endurance.

As for backpackable, disco works nicely for me. Just did a trip with one. Itching to get a backpackable rig with brushless gimbal capability.

Whaaaaaa..... Are those little mini retracts???!?! Badass Pete!! Where'd you find those!

Aye Chris, went back and forth as I REALLLLLLLY like the Kratos but at 850Eu for the foldable X8 I had to jump in. His gimbal stuff is even more sick!! Plus Ferdinand is running it w some low KV w monster props getting unreal flight times. Friggen germans ;) ;)

Retracts... so expensive... At least $8 each from Hobbyking! They seem to be going well. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12883__Digital_Servoless_Retractable_system_1pc_.html
I drilled them out for 1/8" carbon rods for the leg.

Maybe I saw it wrong but looked like you had the gopro mounted upside down. Was more curious why you didnt just put it in right side up but it's really not that big of a deal. :)

Ah - it was a staged hover and retraction just for the tripod camera and I may well have quickly strapped it on upside down! It wasn't recording at that time.

Well spotted!

I've gone backpacking in the mountains for up to two weeks at a time. Seen things nobody else can. A packable, rechargeable system is needed. Wish I had one. What sights there are to convey. Oy Vey

Robert,

this is one: http://www.voltaicsystems.com/offgrid.shtml but a bit underwhelming output
this: (solaris 62) is what you really need but you will add about 3 lbs to your pack http://www.ascscientific.com/solar.html it will also set you back a cool $1K

As an aside, if you're ever up near Mt View flying, PM me. Test flying it at Baylands (for wind) all this week (6-11-13) and probably next. This thing will be about 4"high once it gets the brushless gimbal!
