the antenna was pointed down , bent 90 degrees

Has anyone had a loss of radio signal at a much shorter distance than specs ( 2100 ft- 700m) advertise. I was flying direct line of site over a lake with no electrical interference and at altitude of 70 ft and distance of 800 ft signal was lost and failsafe activated.
